I am looking to get an used SUV for around 14k.

I could potentially stretch that a little bit further if I had to but I'd rather not. It would be my daily driver, and I occasionally make fairly big drives around 4-5 hours. I'm quite opened minded on this, but I do like a bit of style and feature packed cars. Engine wise I'd want a 2L minimum.

I can see a few Range Rovers and BMW X1/2's etc but I've heard the RR are notoriously unreliable.

Open to any thoughts or suggestions people may have.

Depends how “cool” you want to be but a rav 4 would be a good choice. Pre 2015 to avoid the bmw engine.

I wouldn't go for Range Rover at all, we all know the stories behind them, and IMO it is a route to heart break and expense.

A guy I work with has just had the turbo go on his Range Rover Evoque, I don't know where he has taken it for a repair but the bill is expected to be in the thousands.

Poor guy has also had a heart attack a few days later but I doubt the two are related to be fair

I went 2013 X5 40d with 57000m within your budget recently. Highly recommended. Prefer in some ways to my X3M

Oh and indeed yes. I'd be scared of engine issues, timing chain rattle? But...what a machine, my favourite engine in a Range Rover. Well bought!!
