Thinking about buying a 2018 Jaguar XE 2L Diesel as my new motorway cruncher.

Found a decently priced one, with 90k on the clock, full service history and only 1 prev owner.

This one won’t set me back the earth (I’ll just spend the extra I save on the wife’s new car) but want to check if there are any common problems to be aware of?

I’ll service regularly to ensure the thing doesn’t go bang !

Edit: price is 9k!

I signed up to some Facebook Jag groups when musing if an xf would make a good 5 series replacement.

This link came up today. It is fair to say the 2 litre diesel is a gamble:

For around 9k I'd be looking at the Infiniti Q50, it'll eat up the miles with ease & depending on spec you can get a low mileage one too.

Thank you sir! For the right car I can probs add another £3k….

Not looking to throw much in, as I’ll run it until it dies!

How would Astra’s / 320d’s fare - the infiniti’s look a little dated from the interior IMO

I'd be looking at either the 3.0TDV6 in the XF/XJ or stick to petrol. Unfortunately the Ingenium 2.0 diesel is not that reliable as a used purchase.

And i say this as a man who loves his 2009 XK 4.2 very much, and equally appreciate my partners 2010 XF 3.0 Diesel. There's lots of good Jaguars out there, but very few have that engine. Incidentally, the 2.2 diesel is a different engine and absolute fine. Its not an enlarged capacity version of the Ingenium 2.0, its a Ford derived unit first used on the X Type.

Back in 2005 one of my neighbours had a X-Type with that engine. When he started it up in the morning it sounded like a canal boat! Made my E46 320td almost seem refined. laugh

Oh certainly. However, it was an engine which just never seemed to die, I've seen plenty of examples with over 200k miles on them. If you're going to have an engine that is so "unjaguar-like" as a diesel, it may as well be one that's imortal laugh

My car was up when the XE was just launched, my budget just allowed for the boggo spec 2.0D Ingenium so I excitedly went for a test drive.
Wow! the engine refinement was awful, it honestly sounded worse than a transit van, the 2.0D Golf I had at the time was sublime by comparison.
The car drove well and everything but I couldn't live with that noise. Perhaps later models were improved.
I ended up getting an A3 sport back which was lovely.

Quite. Ford managed to make subsequent diesel engines worse from rhat point on. We had a transit that had over 250k on the clock when it went to auction and was only put there due to the rest of rhe van falling apart.
