Hi guys

I think I’m gonna bite the bullet and get a new (old) run around. I current have a 2006 bmw x5 but the rust is starting to set in, just failed an mot on corroded brake pipes all round, and rear frame corroded as an advisory, I had a e46 before and the rust got to that and it was a losing battle in the end!

The body work isn’t the best so I can’t see it being worth a lot, so maybe get it through this mot then look to sell.

But what to replace it with? The £700 tax on the BM is taking the p as well, not sure what’s out there that has cheap tax if any?

I live in the mountains so the 4x4 has been a god send in the snow!

Any ideas

What about something with 4wd but not ground clearance - e.g. Leon Xperience/Golf Alltrack/Octavia Scout, Subaru *something* etc

Having spent a good few years commuting up a single track hilly road in the Highlands, I found all season or winter tyres more important than 4wd in snow, ice and wet. Particularly when coupled with a lot less weight to stop.

And if the snow was deeper than the bumper of a normal car, then I really did not want to be out in it....

Yeah that’s fine really, just need to be 4wd, the height is nice but not essential really! I will have a look at those cars, just been quoted £600 for the brake pipe change, gutted. Gonna try and do it myself lol

I have an audi q5, for £7k you would be looking at a 2.0tdi with about 80k-100k, nice place to be considering the amount of them on the roads not too many horror stories! Mine has been great since we got it seems well built and sturdy.

2 votes for the yeti, but tbh it’s one of the most ugly cars ever!

Another vote for the panda if you don't need a big boot. Ridiculously capable, the twin air pulls well as does the multi jet. The diesel got a 20 bhp power hike about half was through production which is nice to have.

And a third. I'd take ours in preference to our XC70 in properly bad conditions. MJ engine which I think is a better lugger than the twin air.

Never really heard of these before, I see it’s a fiat, is the 500x similar then?

500X is on a Jeep awd chassis IIRC, not the Panda's

The sole reason I didn't get one, it ticks all the boxes for me except it looks terrible!

Surprised the jap fans haven't been in here, honda crv, toyota rav 4 ... all offer good value for money also, I just cant get past the terrible interiors, specifically the dashes!
