Is a short term car lease worth it?

I had my car booked in for an MOT and a few days before it, the starter motor failed. I'm struggling to get anyone to repair it short notice, and equally it's a bit of a banger so I'm sceptical about spending just to get it to an MOT.

I've been weighing up my options of buying a car, but feel rushed and don't want to make a quick decision. Are short term car lease (say 3 months) considered extortionate or in my case would it serve a purpose?
