I have a feeling I know where this one might end up, but I'm keen to make sure I haven't missed anything obvious.

The PHEV Volvo goes back in a few weeks, and I'm looking to go to an EV. The drawback is that ideally I need an EV to do ~200 miles of motorway driving without charging.

My options would either be to spend £30-35k cash (PCP interest rates look a bit mad), which looks like it's only going to leave me with used options, or to lease something new.

From the used cars, if I don't want something with too many miles, it looks like my best bets would be a Polestar 2 LR or a Tesla M3 LR. VWs are out because of the awful controls, and I'm struggling to love the Enyaq. Maybe a Mustang LR without too many miles would squeeze in.

If I were to lease (3yrs, 8k/yr), I'd budget £600/mth all-in, which doesn't get you anywhere near as much as it did when we took the Volvo 3 years ago. In fact, I'm not sure that anything on offer is going to do the 200-odd motorway miles I need without charging.

Am I just buying a used Tesla M3 here?

What's the draw with an EV? Seems you already have a requirement that rules out a lot of EVs as a choice.

Are there any other criteria ie shape, size, comfort or sporty, charging speeds etc...

Your annual mileage to include the 200 mile trip doesn't look very high? Is it a weekly or monthly thing?*

Tesla Model 3 Long Range
IONIQ 6 Long Range
Hyundai Kona 64kWh
MG4 Long Range (if heat pump available?)

Kona is most affordable for cash and can be had with good trim level. Keeping to reasonable speeds you'll see 3.5m/kWh no problem.

Avoid the P2 because plenty of reports of poor range on this forum.

  • if it's only one Long trip a month then there's several PHEV options.

please don't call a Tesla a 'M3' - it makes me shudder.

Can't think why anyone would want an EV _ but you were right with the M3.

E92 M3 - low mileage for 35k........... don't waste money on PCP interest.

Did an Auto as you mentioned motorway mileage etc biggrin

This is the way.

List price for an MG4 Extended Range (77kwh battery, WLTP range 323 miles) is £36,495.00. MG website quoting £399 a month on 8k miles, deposit £5,402 - 49 months. 4.9% representative APR doesn't look mental at the moment.

Gotta be worth a look?

Looking at replacing the family X1 in the not too distant future with a similar budget. Definitely going EV as I’ve got my fun manual ICE, and I enjoy the EV experience for mundane driving and general convenience.

I’m looking at the Model 3, Model Y and Ioniq 5. As this is a white goods type of purchase, it’s hard to look passed the Tesla - the supercharger network and efficiency are hard to beat.

The plan has always been to shift to an EV after the PHEV. Ideally it should seat 4 adults plus 400L+ of boot space. Other than that, nothing major.

Charging speed is largely irrelevant, because it's going to be 90% done at home.

In addition to an EV have you considered another PHEV?

No idea what your requirements are but there is a good choice e.g. 330e/530e, XC40/60, C300e - low miles and nearly new

The ~200-mile trip isn't a daily/weekly thing, but it needs to be done without stopping to charge if possible. A long and boring story that's not relevant to the thread.

I had a look at the MG, and the interior looked awful to my eye. The Kona was about as small as I would go (needing to occasionally seat 4 adults), but I have my suspicions about whether that WLTP range will translate to 200+ motorway miles with such a small capacity.

I'm definitely going full EV this time.

And with that post, you now account for ~13% of the posts on this thread.

It's remarkable that one can say so much, while saying so little.

Do run along now.

Take a look at the Niro instead (in terms of space)

We took a Niro for a short test drive. Two things go against it. Firstly, I don't think it's going to do the range I need. Secondly, the shallow rake of the windscreen felt so weird, almost like wearing someone else's glasses. No dice, sadly.

£35k will get you just into a 2nd hand Tesla Model Y or a very decent Model 3 LR.

MG4 and Kona have boot space too small for your requirements.

How about a Ioniq 5 - they are doing ok now at sensible 2nd hand prices.

If you want PCP, the Tesla Model Y is on 3%, Hyundai and Kia are both doing 0% on selected models and Tesla are doing 0% for Model 3 Rear drive Long Range in the new inventory section.

That's really interesting, thanks. I didn't think Tesla offered finance on used cars for some reason.

The "new" inventory is often demo cars with some miles but they do offer good finance rates when they want to shift them.
