Just bought a low mileage (58000) 40d as a winter hack to keep miles and salt off other things. Anyone any thoughts on what I’m in for/what will go wrong? Other than looking and feeling a bit old, seems a good old barge but not as quick as I’d thought it would be (for overtaking).

Decent SUV. I had one for 4.5 years. Only sold it in early 2022 as it was starting to feel a bit old, I fancied a change and it was not ulez compliant. Good all round family car (I had the 7 seat version). I remapped mine at DMS and it was pretty quick for a 2 tonne truck. Not much went wrong just a couple of random things like washers fluid not working and had to get a new electric parking brake fitted.

……..unless the the plastic timing chain guides break and jam then break the timing chain. As it did on mine 3 days out of warranty. BMW didn’t want to know, just quoted £22k to supply and fit a new engine. In the end it went to a specialist in Cambridgeshire who rebuilt the engine with genuine parts for £8,500.

It was a great car until that happened. Better luck with yours.

Wowsers, is that common? Specific to that variant?

Thanks all - had hear s a few horror stories about N57 engines e failures so was wondering if I should have gone for a higher mileage F15 instead.

Front propshaft broke and made a hole in a sump on mine.

Rear air suspension bags also, but that is cheap to fix.
