Got three things all colliding at once and not sure of the best way to sort.

The fixed one - my insurance renews on 12 December, and I'm moving over from Admiral to Hastings. It's a multi car policy with two vehicles.

One of the cars (a Mini) is due to be picked up by a 'We Buy Any Car' type site on Monday.

I am then due to go and pick up its replacement (a Tiguan) at some point before 12 December.

To possibly complicate matters further, I have a private plate I want to put on the Tiguan. My plate is currently on a paper retention certificate.

What is the best course of action that reduces the number of times I have to pay an adjustment fee? Apologies in advance as I've not moved a plate since 2015, so unsure how much can be done on the website and how much is still done via post.

My thought was to tell Admiral I've got rid of the Mini and that I need to insure the Tiguan for the last week or so of the policy (does a day or two's gap 'without' having a car cause me an issue?)

Then get the plate moved over ASAP, tell Admiral that the plate's changed.

Then notify Hastings that from 12 Dec, they won't be insuring the Mini, and instead will be insuring the Tiguan (on my reg number)?

Thank you

Look for a policy which allows you to change stuff online with no admin fee.
Ageas does that for me, others are out there.

Still get torched for extra premium of course.

Alternatively, if you buy online and cancel within 14 days, the admin fee is less? Not tried this myself, but it looked like an option if I had two cars for a short while around renewal time.

Hastings was significantly cheaper than any other insurer. That's with 17 years NCB on one car, 3 on the other, never had a crash or a point.

The DVLA transfer website says you have to wait until you have the new V5. So think I'm still hopefully going to just be able to give Hastings the details of the Tiguan on my plate.

Admiral didn't charge me for putting the Mini back to it's original plate for what it's worth.

I'm going to give them both a call, as the easiest course of action for me (changing the reg on the Tiguan at 11pm on the night of the 11th), would make it difficult to give the details to Hastings in advance, app or otherwise.

If it helps anyone else finding this post in the future

Think I got through to someone that was being trained as they were putting me on hold for 15 seconds at a time to check answers.

Their simplest solution is to keep the insurance going on the Mini that was taken away yesterday, and schedule it to swap over on Thursday. They kept using the turn of phrase "it changes over when you put the keys in the new car."

I can't do anything with the number plate until I have the new V5 for the new car, according to the DVLA.

However, pleasant surprise. Because I'm in a renewal period, Admiral haven't charged me any extra for changing the car, and there would be no subsequent charge to change the plate even though there's only a handful of days remaining on the policy.

Fingers crossed for a speedy V5 if we do it online.
