£20k - XKR, Granturismo or?
Discussion
I'm looking to move on from my 987 Boxster. I need something a little bit more comfortable, faster, 4 seats and reasonable to insure - "Old Man" brands are fine, BMW or Audi probably not. GT cars seem to fit the bill.
0-60 under 5s is a reasonable minimum performance.
As of now I've narrowed it down to the Granturismo 4.7 or an XKR 5.0. Both will be higher mileage. The Jag seems like a safer bet but it just doesn't look as good!
Are there other options I'm missing?
As an ex owner of a GT Sportline which was fantastic I'd say get one BUT it won't be cheap to run compared to the XKR.
An alternative to both is the CL 500 with the 4.7TT engine it's ballistic in standard form but a cheeky map will have you at AMG levels, they also handle very well:

You've not mentioned a budget, but have you considered an Aston Martin Rapide? 4 true seats and 4 doors. The XKR is a wonderful thing, but i don't think you can really call it a four seater, it's more of an occasional 2+2. Those rear seats are quite restricted.
Around about the 20k mark give or take. Thankfully it’s only a very small dog that needs to go on the back seat I don’t want to lose boot space vs the Boxster so I’m avoiding 2 seatersMax1111 said:

Oh well in that case! XKR all day long my friend. Fairly reliable (given the power), surprisingly good on fuel and hilariously fast when you mash the loud pedal into the shagpile. They make a wonderful noise at every stage from idle to redline too. Isofix as standard in the rear, so you can strap poochy in securely for the ride. I very nearly went for the R over my XK (wirh the older 4.2 engine of the new shape), but a combination of not trusting myself and my budget not really being strong enough to do the car justice put it beyond my reach.
I recently made the switch from Boxster 987.2 to 5.0 XKR for much the same reason and I absolutely love it - Both excellent cars in different ways but certainly don't regret changing. As others have said the XKR is comfy and refined when you want it and crazily fast too - its an addictive combination !
I previously owned a 2010 5.0 XKR and now have a non-supercharged 2014 XK Signature. I prefer the more progressive power delivery of the NA car, which gives it a more relaxed nature, and find it nicer to drive on a regular basis. It is hardly a slouch, and to my ears it sounds better too. Maybe try both; if the NA car appeals, the budget will stretch to a newer/lower mileage example.
I can't offer a comparison with any competitors as I didn't consider any.

I still have my 5.0 XKR convertible which I bought nearly new in 2012. Grancabrio was also on the shortlist but I ruled it out on grounds of a ridiculously small boot and a worse power to weight ratio than my then current car, a RS4 when I wanted to step up in performance. I have never owned another car as long and I used it as sole family transport for about 5 years to transport wife, 2 small kids and a dog! It still feels very special, you could argue that as time passes and these kind of cars become rarer it feels even more special.

That’s what I like to hear! It feels like a natural progression. Which year did you go for?RD-1 said:
I went from a 987 Boxster to GT, if there are any specific comparisons you want to know.
How have your maintenance costs been? My 987.2 has been about £2k a year. One large job per year on average. What kind of mpg (I know) do you get?
An old Quattroporte drove past me last night and that thing sounded incredible! Still need to check one out in person
I'd recomend an XK having inherited my dads 2 months ago.
Started out thinking not the car for me but I love it now and use it daily. Its only the 4.2 XK but its made me think that an XKR may be my next buy. The 4.2 isnt quick enough but its so comfy and I am loving an auto box and heated seats which is in contrast to my quite raw 996 and Defender 90
