Hi,

Looking to buy 2016 BMW X1 with part service history-4 years out of 7 years. Is there a way to retrieve the service history from BMW? What are the implications on buying the vehicle? It is cheaper price on the market with 1L miles 2000£ less than the market value.

It makes a difference is it is the first 4 years or the most recent 4 years....

Are X1s new/fancy enough to have the onboard service history display?

The history should be in the idrive on the dash

Bear in mind these are on condition based servicing which is mileage/age dependent

It means the car can go 2 years or approx 19k miles between services

I wouldn’t therefore expect a 7 year old car to have had an annual service if it was serviced as per bmw service schedules

Any bmw dealer will be able to tell you it’s service visits as can bmw if you ring them

He has last 4 years,I hope it was not serviced for initial 3 years as MOT was not done.I'm going to check the vehicle and I will check the idrive has the history or not.

Thank you.I'm going to check the car idrive history this week.I will ring BMW to check if they have any information as well.
The mileage is 100k and he said its recently Serviced, replaced brake pad and battery.

Personally I would walk - PSH just says allot about owners if there is no evidence. Assuming its a chain driven engine variant, long intervals dont do them any favours either.

Plenty out there with proper history if you cant find it.

I just phoned BMW and they have 5 service records from 2017 to 2020. I will collect the service history from BMW. The seller bought this vehicle in 2021 and he has the service records till today on a private Garage, hence no records in the BMW system. That means the vehicle has a full service history.

The seller has outstanding finance on the vehicle, he says to pay directly to the finance and collect the vehicle. What is the process for buying the vehicle already in finance as a private buyer?

I bought a 2010 E93 earlier in the year, it had notes of service history but when I took it in to a BMW indy for service he dipped the key and it gave him everything on the car.

Turns out it had really good history, much more than I had thought.

I've since found the original service book which shows the stamps from BMW

I like your optimism that it has a full service history. Given the age of the car (new-ish, but still old enough for some important bits to need replacing), I would have a close look at the service records to see what has been done. When was the brake fluid last changed? (should be done on a 2 or 3 year interval). When were the brake pads and discs last changed? What about the spark plugs?

I have a 2019 petrol X1 - it will soon need a major service including new spark plugs, air filter and pollen filter. Diesel doesn't have spark plugs but might require a new fuel filter at a similar age.

Thank you for the insight from the X1 owner. The seller has mentioned break pad, disk, and Battery changed recently. I will get this checked and I will ask about the brake fluid and air/Poller filter. Is there anything that needs to be checked? I heard X1 has a timing chain and doesn't need a replacement

Correct - the petrol and diesel engines are both chain driven, and the chain should last 10+ years so long as the oil is regularly changed.

This model of X1 (2016-2022) is a good car. Very spacious for its size, and good performance from the 20i and 20d engines. I would recommend that you find an independent BMW specialist in your area to do the servicing, as they are cheaper than BMW main dealers, but still knowledgable about these cars and the kind of faults they can develop.

We have a 2015 118d S Drive X1 and it's been an excellent family car.

Roomy, comfortable, cheap to run and reliable in the 2 years we've owned it.

I have seen the vehicle yesterday and took a ride. The car is clean and I can't find any issues except the service history part.is it worth taking it to the garage to inspect and the cost is 200£? or trust him and do the checks later during MOT? brake pads and battery replaced

If you’re buying privately then it’s a judgement call as to whether you get an inspection done as you have no real comeback on the seller

£200 could be well spent, conversely buy it if you think it’s ok and take it to a trusted garage and spend the £200 on having it serviced and checked over properly at least then you’ll know at the start of your ownership it’s spot on

Don’t wait for and rely on an MOT test to tell you it’s in fine fettle

Different if buying from the trade as you are protected

From what you say it’s been well looked after and they are a good car
