£10k to £15k winter hack
Discussion
Estate or mid-size SUV
Something I can stick a set of winter tyres on, drive down potholed narrow country roads, throw bikes into, do tip runs, not too high for dogs to jump into, but still pull up at work in (without being asked to park around the back)
Xc70/ V90
Allroad
Subaru Forester
Disco 4
A RRS (post-2013) is now in budget but a bit too 'precious' to be treated the way I want
Old school Defender is way out of budget (and not as good as a Disco 4)
Jiminy is too small (and out of budget)
What else to consider ?

Mondeo Vignale AWD or Focus Active.
Ford Active is great suggestion......checking out videosA decent Freelander 2 is a much better car than you might imagine.
I don't know if you are in Cheshire or not, but this is an example.

I'd go auto as it suits the car and probably avoid the HSE as sunroofs leak and cause chaos. I've had one for 2 1/2 years and wouldn't be without.

Skoda Octavia Scout?
Perfect for the job and lots available in budget.
For example: https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202310293...
Lots of steel wheels with winter tyre combinations available on Ebay as well for about £250.

Given the narrow country roads, is a C-Class estate a better size than an E? I think the C350e hybrid has adjustable air suspension so you could keep it in the raised position; get one on the smaller 17 inch wheels for some sidewall. Hybrid stuff means the car can be pre-heated on cold mornings. Strong performance too. I had one of those and I would best describe it as "fragile"!https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202310122...
I now have a Volvo V60 Cross Country which is exactly what the OP needs, but the current shape is out of budget.
This is tempting
400 BHP unnecessary
and the silver plastic bits might be better in black.
But should be a chunk under budget.
