A chap is selling his A4 near me, and it’s reasonably tempting.

On 220,00km but with really excellent service history.
It’s the lower-powered model (6 speed manual) with 136ps but a remap would see it at approximately 170ps.

2015 model year. Spec is decent; leather etc.

Thoughts? Cambelt/WP/Tensioners we’re done 10k ago, but would it be ready for a new clutch/DMF at that age and mileage?

Do these A4 cars wear their mileage well? It’ll be used mainly for the Autobahn.

Thanks in advance!

I should add that as a German car it’ll have seen its fair share of salted roads in the winters. What’s the rust protection/reputation of these?

These use the infamous EA189 “dieselgate” motor, but don’t let that put you off, they are very reliable and have heard of them hitting 400k miles in the US, so that’s 640,000 km.

With the clutch, the only way to tell will be by taking it on a test drive.

I have never seen issues with rust on these Audis.

Sounds like a nice car and they are good looking. It’s also an Audi so it will maintain its appeal in years to come. With any car if that age just keep on top of the maintenance and expect a few bills.

Probably due a clutch soon, dpf and turbo can also be a worry but go in with your eyes wide open and you will be ok.

I had an A5 with this engine and did 96k miles trouble free, it was a company car and my father in law purchased it after me, he ran it to well over 100k without any issues.

181000 miles on our Tiguan. No significant issues.

I owned one for a brief period (before it was stolen) and I thought it was a great car, nice place to sit, very solid and to me at least I thought it was a good looking car, got positive comments about it in the office car park.

Can't really comment on reliability as it wasn't with me long enough.

It never felt underpowered.

I should add it was 5 years ago since mine was taken so I suspect thieves have moved on to newer models now

We had an A3 with that engine and although it was no sports car it felt quicker than its 138 bhp and drove nicely.
I would imagine it to be very good with a reputable remap.

Just coming up to 158K miles on my 2.0tdi 170 A6 (252K KM) and it is still going strong, although the clutch is just starting to feel like it might need done in the next few thousand miles. Had the car for nearly 5 years now and it has been uber reliable mechanically.

Rust on previous gen A4's was a bit of an issue I think, but later models seem to be more resistant and my A6 is in great shape, considering the miles, and the fact the majority of them have been done in Aberdeesnhire where tons of salt is laid down every winter.

Only thing to be weary of is the oil pressure system.

2 people close to me had these cars and they both suffered with an oil pressure sensor warning problem which couldn't get fixed no matter what. The car never broke down it was just really annoying.

It used to go off after a long run and then coming to a stop. It'd be alright if it was a light on the dash but there was a loud high pitched beep with it as well.
