Apologies guys.
I know I have compared the vw to an x5 in the past.
I’m holding on to my money as long as I can before making the commitment.
Basically I’ve sold my camper, my wife uses a polo.
The polo isn’t big enough as our family wagon as we have a Rhodesian Ridgeback and move some band equipment occasionally for my sons band

Ive still not ruled out the x5 but I’ve recently seen xc90’s kicking about that look quite nice. I know they are only 4cylinder but are they any good?
I’ve not seen a particular car of either make to pursue yet. I like the look of the Touareg black edition but found they are big money. Would the xc90 be a decent alternative?

Many thanks in advance for any advice

I helped a friend buy an XC90 diesel B5 MHEV a few weeks ago. 235bhp and 354lbft I think. She tows horse boxes, so needs the torque.

What a lovely thing in top spec. Every toy!
Yes, a four-pot, but it pulled really well.

And has decent road presence and, if it matters to you, a great image IMO!

Cheers for that, I think they are the best looking SUV in my opinion. I’d go for a v60 estate but I can’t be doing with being sat on the ground ( I drive a van daily for work and always have). Its definitely the running.👍

The Volvo V90CC is a good compromise between an estate and a SUV and usefully cheaper than the XC90.

That’s a nice motor. Are they higher up than a normal v90?

Yep, around 2 inches. Makes the ride lovely, but it can hustle when required! biggrin

The XC90 looks amazing, but the 4 pot engines are a major turn off.

I have recently gone from a 2022 diesel X5 40d to a new XC90 T8 Ultimate.

Like you, I like the image and it is loaded with kit. Quality is really good and after 3.5 months and 9000 miles it is squeak and rattle free. Comfort is good even on 22’s but I sometimes wish I’d let the standard 21’s for a bit more sidewall. It is surprisingly rapid and yeah, the 4 cylinder doesn’t sound nice but to be honest the general levels of noise are low and it’s only harsh when revved out. There’s plenty of torque so I don’t often feel the need to do that.

Pro’s
Kit levels
Bowers and Wilkins sounds
Handles surprisingly well
Space
Quality
People don’t automatically assume you’re a massive bell (until they see me obvs)
Seats 6&7 much bigger than X5

Cons
Infotainment is just ok. Latest google does the basics well but it’s miles behind BMW in this regard. Google assistant is pretty handy
Annoying to switch drive modes
Mpg when battery depleted - mid to late 20’s on a run but no worse than an X5 45e really
Can’t have two phones live which is really annoying as I have work and personal phone and have to toggle

Hope this helps?

Fairly new xc90 owner.

Quality is brilliant
2.0 mins hybrid diesel pulls a horse trailer with 2 horses in without issue.
Ride on air suspension is amazing to say it’s got 22mm h wheels.
Space and safety/tech/spec is brilliant
You can get 7 full size humans in there

Engine doesn’t sound amazing though.

To add 43mpg on a run, 25 towing circa 2300kg

I'm a big Volvo fan I've had an XC90, V90, and now XC60 in that order. They're all fine cars and the internal lay out in terms of the layout is broadly the same. The XC90 is great for load lugging and hugely comfortable for long trips. Only draw back is the physical size. 95% of our journeys are around town, school runs, shops, supermarket etc. V90 was a great in-between however for our mileage/use profile petrol made more sense than diesel and the T5 petrol was pretty thirsty I'd have another but in the cc variety they offered no PHEV which is ideal for our usage.

The current XC60 is the best all rounder for us. It's got 60 mpg over 20k miles and when I repalce it next year I reckon it will be with another.

We also have a dog and the compromise will be to get a roof box.

Only other thing to mention with the Volvos and the XC90 is the design is getting on, there's been a few face lifts. I get on with the infotainment but there generally a lack of physical buttons and dials. They're really comfortable cars, despite the T8 having ~400bhp it doesn't feel fast, even in sports mode IMO it feels like it doesn't like being pressed too hard. I'd imagine the X5 will be more of a drivers car but to be honest they're all 2 tonne plus bits of metal that are never going to be sports car nimble.

We use the T/B6 XC90's at work

Incredibly unreliable compared to the X5's (which we ran before the Volvo's).

If your planning on buying and then keeping get the X5

If it must be a XC90 get a good warranty.....
