Help please - Which SUV to buy?
Discussion
Morning All
I think the time has come to get myself an SUV of some sort, I'm no longer a spring chicken, Mrs A is a bit broken following a few back operations, and I don't want to always borrow her car when I take our two dogs out for a wander.
I currently drive (and love) my Audi S6 saloon but fear I'll have to look at something with around 100bhp less, or win the lottery, which I don't do.
I've been looking and in terms of power, looks, price, and interior features the only one that really appeals is the Range Rover Evoque p250 r-dynamic se.
Am I missing other options? I don't like the Audi Q5 as I can't stand the permanent sticky up screen.
2020 or newer, not fussed if it's a petrol or a diesel.
What else should I be looking at and is the RR Evoque a good option?
Thanks.

I'd be looking at some sort of six-cylinder X3; personally I'd go for a 30d or maybe even a 40d budget permitting as diesel just suits cars of this size better IMO. However it sounds like you've pretty much made your mind up tbh so go for the Evoque and pray to all the major gods that you get a good one.

I haven't made my mind up, not by a long shot, I'm really unsure of what to get. But I don't really like the look of the X3 if I'm honest, I'll have a look at them as well though.RizzoTheRat said:
I have some back issues and found the XC60 I test drive recently very comfortable and a nice place to be. My wife thinks it's too big though so I need to work on that as the XC40's not available with the XC60's 450 bhp.
I totally forgot to mention the XC60 in my suggestions above. I know someone with a red B6 R-design, it's a lovely car, very comfortable and quick.Phil. said:
The Evoque has limited visibility especially through the rear window and is quite small overall for a SUV. Check out the boot is big enough and accessible for your dogs.
If tell us your budget we could suggest alternatives more easily.
Sorry, I forgot about that. Ideally I want to spend around €45K (I live in Germany), and get something that's around 2 - 3 years old.If tell us your budget we could suggest alternatives more easily.

If he's looking at 2020 Evoque's then £30-35k probable budget? If tell us your budget we could suggest alternatives more easily.
XC60 MHEV would be my choice

or the T8 plug-in

Can you get the Merc GLC400d(2.9 straight 6 twin turbo diesel) over in Germany? We don't get that model here in the UK, but we did have a 2017 GLC350d(3.0 V6 single turbo diesel) for almost 5 years and just over a 100k miles and it was a lovely all round car we thought.
We currently have a 2022 GLE400d(2.9 straight 6 twin turbo diesel) and the engine is lovely in it for a diesel(330bhp/516Ib/ft torque), so that is why I mention/suggest the GLC400d to you.
I did have a test drive in a diesel SQ5(3.0 V6 twin turbo) a few years ago and I really liked that to drive as well.

Every time I look at these types of vehicles its the Porsche Macan that comes out on top, even the Diesel which is no longer made makes a great buy IMO.
I've always been a fan of the Macan too, however everyone always seems to mention how small they are inside though. But I guess that the Evoque that the OP is considering isn't very big inside either though. Used cars are always a lot more expensive over here than in the UK for some reason, so that will also play a role.
To be clear, I haven't even looked at anything yet, I just liked to look of the Evoque but there doesn't seem to be much love for it on here so maybe that's a nono
The Alfa would just scare me, sorry.
The Volvo does look like a good option and I could easily get the XC60 T6 AWD R Design AWD within budget, if the back view of it didn't make me want to violently throw up.
the Mercedes GLC400 is out of budget.
The Macan would be my choice but is also way out of budget.

Just make sure any Evoque does not have the ingenium engine!
What about a Lexus NX? You can get a decent used NX300 or 350 for that budget.
Gordon Bennet Yesterday I was told by a Land Rover engineer 'that's have the AJ21 Ingenium engine, that's a good engine'. Although he added 'if the oil has been changed regularly. If not, it can sludge'.What about a Lexus NX? You can get a decent used NX300 or 350 for that budget.
Life is like a box of chocolates!

Presumably because of the taxes on new cars. An XC60 T8 Ultimate is £59k new in the UK compared to €81k (£70k) here in NL, I'd guess German taxes are similar.RizzoTheRat said:

I could be wrong but I am sure I remember reading the seats on Volvo's are in part designed by orthopaedic surgeons so that they are good for the back/posture. Certainly some of the most comfortable seats I have sat in and I have a "bad back" too.Gassing Station | Car Buying | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
