New (used) Daily advice
Discussion
Hi all looking for some advice... After a new daily. 32 y/o single male.
Looking for a comfortable all rounder with luxury element, decent to drive, can do short or long distances well.
Budget: £15k-£17k
I know this is a car enthusiasts forum so may not go down well but premium badge is important to me right now (single, building career) so sticking to Audi/Merc.. BMW maybe an option just not had a good experience personally yet on test drives or in showrooms..
Lifestyle - commute to office daily 1 mile each way.
Business use - 15 miles per day.
Visit London every quarter - 3 hour trip
Visit Wales 3 times per year - 4 hour trip
Non-negotiables/must haves:
Automatic gearbox
Heated seats
Comfy on a run/Ride quality not too firm (bad back/knee)
Good infotainment (carplay ideally but a good bluetooth and sat nav combo that's easy to live with is fine..)
Would like but non essential:
Apple Carplay (not essential if nav system is good enough)
Sound system (happy with nice sounding stock system. Mercedes one was great but audi stock not so good)
Digital dash with sat nav in dash
Ambient lighting (preferably multi-coloured)
Panoramic Roof (i know this one will be tough, got it on my current car and it is a lovely option to have in summer)
Not too much road noise
Electric seats
Cars I've had so far and what I liked disliked...
Mercedes A Class 2018 W176, AMG Line Petrol
Pros:
Loved the interior nice place to sit
Stock sound system sounded sweet
Looked great
Badge
Cons
Engine was poor
Ride quality was awful, way too firm and crashy for UK roads.
Way too much road noise
A bit cramped inside (I'm 6'4)
Golf GTD 2018 Mk 7.5 DSG
Pros:
Great to drive
Fuel economy ridiculously good even after thrashing it
Had all the extras needed as standard
Sat Nav in drivers display was a treat
All rounder - most enjoyable car I've had overall
Cons:
Not quite as comfortable or luxury as other choices
Diesel.. need a petrol now
Image - not as professional as an audi, a bit drug dealer.
GTI would amplify this...plus they always get nicked where I live..
Audi Q3 2018 Black Edition TDI
Pros:
Looked stunning outside in black edition spec..
Comfy, spacious enough + Ride height was great. Easy to get in/out of.
Ideal size for my lifestyle, practical.
Cons:
Kind of boring drive!
Interior was unbelievably dated. Terrible sat nav, tiny screen. No carplay. Made it frustrating to live with.
Felt the fuel economy was poor for what it was
Currently driving:
Golf SE Navigation 2018. 1.6 TDI.
It's served a purpose but isn't luxury at all, cloth seats. Not doing as many regular long trips so Diesel needs to go.
Cars I've currently got my eye on and match my budget/option wants. Looking at anything 2017 upwards.
Audi A4 Saloon
Audi A5 Coupe
Audi A5 Sportback
Mercedes C Class Saloon/Coupe
Thinking a coupe might be for me as hardly carry passengers - but then always nice to have the practically if needed so undecided here. Looking for some advice from those who've had daily coupes and saloons/SUV's here. Is owning a coupe long term a pain, or are the looks/drive worth the compromise?
Going to try and keep this car for a 3 years at least and paying in cash, so something reliable with about 30-60k miles on it which I can put another 40k miles on and still be able to sell.
Any input appreciated...
TIA!

"Image - not as professional as an audi"
What 'image' are you wishing to portray? What line of work are you in that your 'image' is so important?
Drivers of Audis, Mercs and BMWs certainly do have an 'image' but it's not always a positive one.
I would suggest a GTD Golf is pretty much a perfect all rounder that doesn't shout 'knob' .

A Golf GTI sounds like it would be a good fit. Great fun to drive and you will never be out of place in a Golf GTI. Some really nice spec'd options out there as well (performance pack with pano roof in navy or that dark silver colour would be my pick).
I wouldn't be buying a car to fit any image, buy what you want as there will always be someone who will judge you either way.

Marketing..
GTD was the best car I've had and would have it again anyway if it wasn't for me needing to move away from Diesel. Was doing 30k miles per year at the time, now doing about 8k-10k
Petrol GTI equivalent is a bit too shouty for me. Much preferred GTD's understated looks.
Plus the Golf's aren't quite as comfortable or have the luxury interior feeling of the 3 above, which is what I'm looking for.
Like VAG group so Audi is what I'm thinking. They're annoyingly harsh with options so just trying to find a well specced one for the money.
Few years down the line would probably throw Skoda into the mix too..

Interesting one, have always liked the look of the CLA but my budget would limit me to a pre 2018 one.. I always assumed that the ride quality would be the same as the A class I had and I could not go back to that. Especially since I'm more in town now with these soon to be winter battered roads than on motorways.
Good point about suspension- The Audi's/VAG cars I find are the best in dealing with this, on test drives found them completely liveable over bumps and when i'm aiming for the potholes..Unlike BMW's/Mercs which are just way too firm and crashy.
Will look more into the CLA

6 series ticks all those boxes imo. I had two, bought the second one - a 640i - when I was 32 as well. I only had coupes but if 4 doors are a must then the grand coupe is available. Ride is quiet and smooth if you go for something with 19s; the 20 option ruined the ride imo.

Do you have a driveway? Why not get a PHEV?
The Audi A3 e-tron is the same as the mk7 Golf underneath. Here's a 2017 model with heated seats. Mileage probably a bit higher than you'd like though. Saying that it wouldn't concern me, I've seen them with 190k on and still tight as a drum. Ignore that it says 101 bhp - that's just the electric motor, these have 205 bhp and are not slow!
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202309141...
Or how about this 2016 model - top tip - if you go for the 2016 model and earlier the annual tax is £0, instead of £170. No pics yet as it's new in, but it's approved used from Audi with 2 years warranty and service and a more sensible mileage of 64k.
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202310102...
You can just about afford a G20 BMW 330e - I think these look proper smart and have 290 bhp. Unfortunately quite leggy at your budget
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202311033...
If you go for the previous gen F30, which I also think looks smart, again you can get a much lower mileage model. Slightly less power at 254 bhp, but still no slouch!
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202307250...
If you don't have a driveway to install a charger, then you could get a normal hybrid, I like these Lexus IS300h's
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202310183...
Lexus Select approved used, so should have an extendable warranty up to 2027 providing you get it serviced with them every year. Not that you'll ever need to use the warranty as they are just so reliable, especially compared to German cars

Some great suggestions here - the C Class could be the one as seems a lot of models come with electric leather heated seats.. don't need the amg line..
CLA, can't find one with those options and still feel it will ride too harshly for me compared to the C-Class...can retrofit carplay & ambient lighting if needed, as I know someone who does this.
Interesting you listed two audi's with the 1.4 engine. I actually found that engine to be super smooth with enough punch on test drives and preferred them to the 2 litre...
Think it will be between
6 Series (might struggle within budget)
Audi A4
Audi A5
Mercedes C Class
Going to arrange some viewings.
Thanks all

If you like Audi, then an A5 Black Edition looks nice.

Interesting you listed two audi's with the 1.4 engine. I actually found that engine to be super smooth with enough punch on test drives and preferred them to the 2 litre...
Thanks all
Yeah the 1.4 EA211s are good engines with decent enough power, good on petrol, and they warm up really quickly, which is very handy when you have to make short journeys. In the A4 and A5 they are mated with a wet clutch DSG gearbox, which is more robust than the dry clutch DSG they are paired with in lesser models like A3s and Golfs, etc. Just don’t try to remap them or anything silly like that, they don’t handle the extra power very well. Thanks all
