I don't need a large family car but i saw a bmw 530d GT at £5000.
It has done 150000 miles and had timing chain done around with water pump.
All 4 tyres and brakes are good for another 15000 miles.
It has an engine light which the seller says as maf sensor fault.
Would you buy the ugly looking rare large car? But yeah that rarity is also sometimes sought after.

What fuel economy could be realistic expectation? A 45 mpg on any day? Thank you

So - the Seller has diagnosed and confirmed the problem is, but not replaced, the MAF?

Bit surprised he hasn't repaired and claims it's a cheap £100 fix.

Bmw with engine light on isn't a good sign afterall.

That car was bit hesitant to reach high speeds even with hard foot, guess the previous owners babied it.
Might take few oil changes and thrashing to get it going again

Anyone selling a car with a known "easy/cheap to fix" fault is trying to finger you.

"Needs MOT, but will fly through" is similar.

i wouldn't drive a 530d GT even if you paid me the 5 grand.

if you don't need the space, just get the best 330d you can?

Tried finding 330d and c350 both 3.0 engine with smaller chassis but unable to find anything below 150000 miles and post 2011 or 2012 updates. Hence, this unwanted 530d GT came up.
Even harder to find one with timing chain and bits done.

After all it's same engine with an ugly design but well built than a 3 series i suppose.

Sellers are liars. The cheap fix won’t be a cheap fix.

Tell them you will pay 5100 for the car with the maf done and a long test drive to check it stays off…(take a fault code reader)

Why does it sell so cheap when it's after all 5 series?
It's cheaper to buy when compared with a 3 series too. Apart from the design what's wrong to stay away.

I would have thought a cheap diagnostics dongle would be a good idea for this and any other car you are looking at.

I have a couple for various different makes and they have been the best money I’ve spent.

Assuming the seller would allow you to use one but a genuine shouldn’t be against the idea.

Huge red flag.

Did he also say the AC just needs a regas? biglaugh

Walk away unless he's giving it away or factor in that the engine light instead of being the easiest fix possible is actually the hardest.

I'm not an expert but the 5GT based on a 7 series rather than a 5 series platform? Or maybe they just pinched the 7 series dash.

No reply when i requested to take it to a bmw garage for a check up. Neither wants to take extra 100 for the maf fix.

That's probably answered your question then.

As a friend of mine once said, 'there's always lots of other cars out there.'

Anyone with functioning eyeballs can see the reason from about 500 metres away.

For a BMW diesel of that era at that mileage i'd suspect the intake manifold/swirl flaps are clogged with soot. It can throw a maf error as airflow is restricted but you need proper bmw software to run the diagnostic tests

Yes it's based on the F chassis 7 series which in turn was the base for the RR Ghost so 5k is a bit of a bargain if it works, although they are all related to the L6 platform (5/6/7) the 5 GT uses the 7 series wheel base IIRC etc...

Would a remap fix it ? Assuming seller fixes maf sensor.
Is it like, you plug in a new maf sensor and engine light goes off and later comes back as airflow is restricted again.
