I'm getting rid of my Z4 coupe, and I'll be absolutely gutted to see it go but I'm needing a sensible car more and more as time goes on, and work is asking me for a lot of miles too.

I had a D5 v70 prior to the Z4 so want something similar, and in the budget of 2-12k, I'm thinking a Superb might be an option alongside a few others like a V40/60/70, S60, E46 Touring, Mondeo etc

I'm realistically wanting a lot of kit, super comfy ride, a half decent bit of oomph, size for lugging things about and fairly reliable.

A lot of people rave about the Superb and they seem great value for money, I'm not put off by high mileage as long as it's backed by receipts for WP/Belts/Servicing, and most importantly the MOT hasn't magically been a 'clean pass' when it failed prior and now it's being sold by a garage haha.

Appreciate any insight or suggestions

It is very much a white goods car, but in terms of value for money, I dont think it can be beaten.

I would personally recommend a 2016 onwards shape in SEL spec with at least 2.0tdi engine (1.6 tdi can be gutless and the 1.5tsi is a bit meh).

The selling points are massive equipment (apple car play/android auto, LED lights, heated leather seats, i think adaptive cruise control standard on SEL too) but mostly its the S class levels of rear legroom and MPV levels of boot room.

Edit to say dont discout the hachback over the estate.
even the hatchback has cavernous and copious amount of boot space.

I have now got the smaller sibling, the 2017 octavia hatch. Even that has ridiculously good leg and boot room

Cant see the Superb being as comfortable V70, but 12k will only get you a 'decent' 10 year old ish one, and all the problems that come with them at that age/mileage.

Having said that, it's certainly worth taking a Skoda out for a spin though, as many peoples acceptance of comfort differ.

I was hoping for an L&K, purely because they tend to be both better looked after and higher spec. The 2.0 is all I'd be interested in really, not sure I could go from the power and torque of the 3.0 6cyl to a gutless 1.5, and having experienced a few VAG 2.0 TDI's I'm guessing it's something they have mastered at this point!

Some solid points so far, hadn't considered an Octavia really but the size would be more than sufficient.

Very much white goods car is BS it’s a nice place to be.

Bought my 280 estate new in 2015 and still have zero desire to replace it with anything.

Loved our 2.0 TDi 4WD estate and more to the point, the wife loved driving it too......Superb car IMO and I've had a few different cars over the years.

I recently sold my late 2018 XF, and wanted a suitable replacement, budget to £24k'ish, I wanted reliability, economy, spec and comfort, under 2 years old.

I looked at A4 / C Class / XE / 508 and a few other bits. I couldn't get anything to come near the Superb for value.

I have ended up buying a 2022 Superb SE-L DSG in Silver, done 13k for £25k, it is coming on Wednesday.

£ for £ I think it is the best vehicle I could have bought for my situation, and am actually excited about getting it.

My favorite ever car

Did 110k in one (2.0 diesel). Utterly brilliant, super comfy, quick enough, buttons to run and a good local main dealer.

Everyone was pleasantly surprised by it.

Mine was a SE-L spec, business grey with beige leather - looked mint.

The Superb is a decent car but I find their NVH levels a little below the Mondeo/Insignia & out of those two the Insignia would get the nod.

I looked at superbe to replace Merc , taxis and police started using them, a good sign. Used a superbe taxi one day and it was huge decided that the Octavia estate was what I needed more than enough room inside.

Bought a 2.0 litre 4x4 and well pleased with it, roomy front and back and all the toys I needed, sat nav, cruise etc. I bought a 1.1 pop plus escort way back and swore I would never, ever, buy the small engined version of a car again. Stuck to that for forty years. 4x4 wasted on me if weather bad enough to need it I won’t be driving in it. Estates are snapped up quickly mine was the only one available at the time so act quickly if you want one.

If you want performance the VRs is the one for you or be a hooligan and buy an ex police 2.8 smile

The 2.0 litre is very nippy, faster than I need but still does good MPG, retired so low mileage per year so consumption not relevant.

I had a 280 L&K estate a couple of years ago. Compared very favourably with a 2007 E61 525d estate that I had a few years earlier for refinement.

Earlier this year I had a current 530d as a loan car. Much comfier.

I feel that the Superb is great for the money, and comparable to a BMW at the same price while being a lot newer.

I had a 2017 280 L&K estate from new, coming out of an E61 535d estate. It was roughly as quick, larger but felt smaller, not as wafty at all, but I really liked it.

Since replaced with a 2020 A6 Avant and despite that have a list price nearly double the Skoda, it’s not as good a car. The Audi is a diesel so is also nowhere in comparison in terms of acceleration either. I’d have the Skoda back in a second.

OK, so no Suberb is really going to handle, but that’s…fine? It’s not a helmsman’s choice, just a great car to own and use, as happy doing tip runs, jaunts across the continent, or noising up hot hatch owners biggrin

Everything worked and nothing broke in the time I had mine.

These look like really good value.

Why do they all have rubber band profile tyres?!

Running a 15' 2.0 SEL exec for past 3 years and as a commuting / family wagon it's superb.

190ps, adaptive cruise etc. For the price it's hard to beat. Other than servicing and 2 glow plugs it's been hassle free.

My old '65 plate one just hit 200k according to the MOT site.

Only advisories have been misting of oil on dampers and tyre tread.

We have just sold our Superb.
2015 Tour De France which we chipped to 190 bhp.
Manual box with 4wd.

I was guided away from the DSG at that age by our local garage but wanted manual anyhow.

It was great in the context of a utility car.
A friend has the same era A6 which is miles ahead in refinement.

We sold because of the lack of refinement. On the motorway it was just to noisy and not as comfy as I wanted.

Size wise they are epic.
The TDF model looks great with the anthracite wheels and grill.

At our son's prep school a Skoda Superb is the second car of choice.

My wifes runaround is a 2017 Superb SEL 1.4 ACT and its a great car.

Drives nicely, bit floaty if you try to hustle it but super comfy on a run and loads of space for child seats and adult passengers

NVH isnt as good as i'd have hoped but im hoping the next set of tyres will reduce the noise a little.

its 150 bhp so plenty grunty enough and the act is very good giving great fuel consumption, have seen high 50's just pottering about

The third generation (2015ish onwards) is very different to the second generation Superb. I have a third generation (2017) SEL Exec with the 2.0 TDi 150 and apart from the two aux electric water pumps it has only required routine servicing and maintenance over the past circa 60k miles (now on 114k). They're not a particularly heavy car so tyres and brakes last a long time too (recall Superb being around 1400kg vs equivalents 5 series at 1800kg).

What they do seem to suffer from is squeaky or creaky suspension, well reported on owner forums and as I understand affects lots of cars based on the same platform (so A3, Golf, Passat, Octavia etc).

Indeed, mine was on the original front pads, discs and rear tyres when it was sold at 110k..
