Hello

My son is looking to buy a mark 7 Golf GTI and is favouring the DSG automatic transmission over manual. I hear that both are good but is there a clear advantage to either or is it just personal preference?

Many thanks

I had a manual in my Mk7 GTI and really enjoyed it. It’s just really nice to use and hassle free. I had no issues with the clutch despite a Revo remap and near 70k miles by the time I switched but they can be fragile if used really hard.

DSG is quicker and better in traffic. Can handle remaps better as well though costly if it goes wrong. Suppose to be more boring to drive but doesn’t bother me. Suits the automatic cruise control better as well.

Personal preference but I’d go DSG if doing it again.

I had a DSG and it worked well with this car/engine.I had it in auto most of the time but can instantly override and change down by using the flappy paddles.
There is a higher maintenance cost though. You're supposed to change the transmission fluid every 40k miles. Cost is £200+.

This is obviously very much personal preference... but I had a Mk7 GTi with the DSG and most of the time I wish I'd just got the manual. Although the DSG is quicker on paper, I didn't think it felt it. I moved on to a MK3 Cupra with the manual and enjoyed that a lot more.

As I say, your needs may be different though if you're mostly doing a commute on busy roads etc...

Not quite the same, but I has a mk7 R with a manual gearbox. Never really warmed to it. The shift itself always felt notchy and never smooth. The clutch is far too light (it really stands out as feeling light compared to the other pedals, the steering and the gearshift). And because the engine puts out most of its power low down and dies at bit at the top end, you find you’re shifting gears more than you want to.

I had a mk7 Golf GTI with a manual gearchange. It was a really good car in many respects, but I never really liked the gearbox. It was both a bit vague and a bit notchy. Perhaps I was unlucky, but I wouldn't recommend one of these with a manual 'box.

Having driven both, I enjoyed the manual for short bursts of spirited driving, but it wasnt rewarding enough, so when I chose my next company car, the DSG was the tool of choice. Better 90% of the time

Having owned a Mk7.5 GTI DSG I can concur that most of the time it's a great box. However for that 10% of the time where I wanted a back road hot hatch of old, the DSG just can't compete for involvement and fun.

Obviously horses for courses this. Advise him to try both and see what he prefers. For both spirited driving and sedate driving, I much prefer DSG. Goes really well with that car and engine but that's just my personal preference.

There was an issue with the manuals on these ref the standard clutch, even on stock power. That might be more the R and Cupra Leon's possibly though, with the extra power.

I've owned a Mk7 GTI and R, both with the six-speed DSG, and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another.

Later versions with the 7-speed DSG are pretty much maintenance free, but if he's looking at a 6-speed, make sure that the gearbox oil has been changed at 40,000 miles.

Currently drive a 2017 mk7 GTi DSG, had it coming up 3 years, DSG suits the car perfectly imo. I can potter around with 4 kids and a dog in it, no bother in auto, then when I'm on my own I can flick into manual and have fun down a B road. Only problem you tend to get on these is thermostat weeping, worth researching so you know what to look out for. DSG needs servicing every 40k, so look out for that as well.
