Hi all,

Briefly, I have a BMW 1 series which I'm losing next month. My company now provides a car allowance instead and I need to source my own car - has to be a 4/5 door 'sensible' kind of car. It also has to be new or not more than 4 years old.

I'm inclined to use a bank loan and buy something outright rather than lease and I don't want to be worse off as a result so my budget is only up to about £14K max.

I have a Toyota MR2 for 'fun' so am happy for this one to be a not particularly exciting runabout. Being economical/reliable and cheap to run are more important and it will be a petrol car.

My initial thought was a Dacia Sandero but new waiting lists are up to 6 months! I could get a nearly new one though. I've also wondered about the MG3 - I had a test drive and it actually felt pretty good to drive, more like my BMW than the Dacia which felt lighter and less connected. I can get a new MG3 for £13K which also has the benefit of a long warranty, new tyres and an engine with a timing chain (an old design but said to be reliable).

I don't want to go any smaller in size but wondering if there's a 'sleeper' car that I'm not considering? Any suggestions welcome.

Why does it need to be less than 4 years old?

If your car allowance is being paid direct to you PAYE and there is an annual figure (e.g. £6k annual car allowance) then pretty sure you can do what you want with it

It's my company's rules it seems.

With that budget you actually can get a decent 2021 car for that money.

Often wondered how these internal company rules work in practice…

I guess that anyone who took an interest could see/find out what car you have - as you may need to register it on the expense claim system etc.

What would happen when if/your sub 4-year-old car turns 4? Would you expect to receive a e-Mail from HR?
