Any advice on the Arteon R?

I’m in the market to replace my ST edition in the new year and have a budget of around 35-38k and whilst browsing I found one of these - and I’ve not seen ANY in the flesh.

They don’t seem to be poorly reviewed, their spec genuinely ticks almost all of my boxes and they’re nicer looking (imho) than equivalent aged Audis or BMW’s in the same age bracket… but, I see loads of these (S3 etc)

Are there any other similar cars I should be considering? I’m aiming for the next car I purchase to be a bit more grown up than the ST, which I still absolutely love but it’s impossible to shake the boy racer image - not that an R, S3 etc will necessarily help

I suppose other cars of consideration are the likes of the M2, CLA45 etc - but not looked into them too much yet

Skoda Superb is available with the same drivetrain.

You don't see many Arteons around, even though they are a decent looking car. I suspect the issue is that people in the market for a largish saloon/hatch would prefer to have a fancier badge (BMW/Merc/Audi) or more utilitarian and go with the Skoda. (Or just get an SUV like everyone else)

I know economy probably isn't the top of your considerations, but don't expect much more than 23-25mpg round town, 32-36mpg on a run, when taking it steady. I've got the same engine in my Formentor and its as thirsty as you would expect for a 300+bhp engine, plus the Arteon is a touch heavier.

Otherwise I quite like them....rarity is a bonus if you ask me...and much less likely to be taken off your driveway in the night...

Interesting point on the economy, the Fiesta ST is surprisingly frugal on a run, can get 48-50 or so, but average 36 overall - even though 23ish would be a big drop, it shouldn’t be too bad with me doing 7-10k miles per year

I feel like I’m boring for saying this, but one of the main draws is the auto, whilst manual is fun I think I’d rather have an auto these days

Arteon shooting brake looks nice but it's expensive for what is basically the same platform you get with a hot Skoda, Seat or Golf.
If they depreciate to be a similar price to a used golf R estate I'd be keen on one though 😁

I don't dislike the Arteon, it's a handsome car, but at that price point I'd find it hard to look past an M340i, unless you absolutely need the space the Arteon offers.

I'd be going M340i or S4, both of which are 3.0 six pots and better drives.

I don’t need a four door saloon, absolutely fine with coupes and I don’t need the space - some good options there, I’ll have a look at the 340i and the M2, though for some reason newer BMWs arent the most handsome things, although some of the M cars look good depending on spec

I wouldn't have thought it would take much to get it driving well - remap would give you around 370bhp.

This press article suggests it should be pretty good with the standard setup though, maybe just need to firm it up a bit?

Driver engagement isnt just about more power though. Fundamentally its a four banger with AWD which never really have much of a sense of occasion in my experience.

We ran a A45 for 3 years and whilst it was quick it felt like driving in a computer game. I've now an M2 and its in a different league altogether - even though its slower overall.

Yes, the post 21 M3 and M4 and 2023 M2 arent the prettiest of things but the respective previous gen M2, M3 and M4 are prettier.

The M cars are a league above the Mx40i variants. Completely different beast. I think a 2020 M2 Comp is cracking value right now. M4 is bigger but doesnt get as good a name as a drivers car. M3 is - weirdly - more expensive than the M4, which is odd given its normally the coupe variant that costs more.

I really like the M340i after test driving it a while back...offers a good amount of performance without screaming steal me. Think it comes with adaptive suspension as standard right? The one I drove was very comfortable and has the advantage of not having the marmite grille on the M3 and 4 series I guess.

I agree with your comment about the Mx40i and full M cars, I've gone from an M240i to an M4 and there is a massive difference but that being said I thoroughly enjoyed my 3 years with the M240i and I must admit even taking it for trade in I felt a little sad to see it go, not that I'd ever use it if I kept it of course.

I think Mx40i cars are still a very good option, the B58 engine is an amazing piece of kit.

Absolutely. Definitely a great engine and it works well with the ZF8 box.

We ran an M140i for 3 years from new and i then bought a 2018 M2 OG. I was actually quite shocked by how different it was. Just a completely different animal. But we did love the M140i when we had it.

Agreed. The M340i would be a brilliant all rounder with oodles of power. I'd definitely pitch for one of those over the Arteon R (in fact, i did!).

The same money would be buying a notably older and previous gen M3 both of which would be considerations.

I guess when i saw the O/P said they were coming out of a Fiesta ST (best in class hot hatch) and did mention an M2 i thought i'd bring it out in the open a bit more, given he doesnt actually need a four door.

If i needed a four door, an M340i would be on a very short shortlist but not having the M2 would sadden me greatly.

Awesome post ad always, I was dreading someone mentioning the Quadrifoglio as I’ve always coveted them - I really should go and take one for a test drive

And I say dreading as I feel like it’d likely be higher yearly costs than some of the others mentioned - I actually didn’t check whether they were in budget.

Simple tell her it's a Veloce Ti with the Sports exhaust

Also although these full fat cars cost more to run they do depreciate less than the cooking models so that does tend to balance things out.
