Hi guys,

What would be your ideal car for a European road trip with a £50k budget (with rear seats suitable for a 7 year old)?

In the next 12 months I am heading to Paris, the Nurburgring & Vienna on three separate trips from Kent - I currently have a BMW M4 Competition Cabriolet but am conscious it's not going to be particularly comfortable in the back for my 7 year old daughter on the longer stints:

Current contenders:

Land Rover Range Rover Autobiography L405 (with warranty!)

https://used.landrover.co.uk/approved-used/land-ro...

BMW M5 Competition

BMW X4M Competition

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202303105...

Jaguar F Pace SVR

Or TOTALLY left field!!

Bentley Flying Spur

Any other better suggestions? My only real stipulations are that it needs decent rear seats & a bit of grunt...

Many thanks,
Daniel

Depends what you mean by a road trip. I’m typing this from the ferry on my way back from 3 weeks touring Spain and Portugal in my Boxster S, where I made a beeline for every winding mountainous road I could find. Perfect for the Boxster. But if by road trip you mean continent crushing, then maybe an RR or Bentley might be ideal. Those would utterly ruin my idea of a road trip though!

Continent crushing with some scenic routes thrown in where possible...

Cheaper ones exist, but I liked the blue.

Has to be a Ferrari. £50k down and the balance on finance.

I'd be wanting an interesting car rather than a good one. All the above seem good but not that interesting.

I have a 7 year old and a 9 year old and a Rapide S. Enough boot space for the luggage (especially if you only have one kid - you could fold a seat down) and if you dont think one of the last naturally aspirated V12 engines is interesting, then im not sure what would be defined as interesting. The kids love it in the back (and I love it in the front !)

Yep a used FF half cash and half finance, the mid teens mpg will certainly make the trips memorable even you forget that the front drive shaft went just outside Munich. biggrin

You will also find MC Stradales in budget occasionally. Nearest thing you're going to get to a Ferrari FF for the budget. smile

a big estate or saloon would be my choice. it'll be a cold dark day in hell before i ever consider owning an SUV.

as you've already got a 4 series, its hard to look past an M5 as the perfect upgrade, though a 6 series GC is also a great shout, slightly more stylish option for cross continental cruising. and a 640d could probably manage kent to the nurburgring and back on one tank of diesel.

I would take my Guilia Quad.

Did 450 mile round trip in a day recently in it - very comfortable long distance GT car, but put it in race and it's a nurburgring lap record setting driving weapon.

In the OPs list I'd have the M5 but in reality I'd buy an M540i Tourer. Sure it only hots 60 in 5s not 3.4 but it'll also let you relax a bit and you have more space for stuff.

There was an Aston Martin Rapide parked next to me on the ferry a few weeks ago, made a wonderful noise in the confines of a large metal box.

Probably under budget too.
