Most comfortable 2005-2020 compact car
Discussion
Given the poor road conditions in my area, I'm presently in the market for a compact car that offers a very comfortable ride. Ideally, the car should be a hatchback and possess ample space to easily accommodate a bicycle with a detached wheel. I'm particularly interested in models manufactured between 2005 and 2020. Also it shouldn't cost an arm and leg to run and hold it's value well.
Forgot to mention - 5 doors (or 4 in case of oddities such as Hyundai Veloster, which are still hatchbacks) is a must.

There aren't many hatches more comfortable than the Infiniti Q30 and the Volvo V40 XC
Second for the V40 cross country. The extra ride height over the standard model makes a big difference plus the seats are amazing, as is the air con and stereo - all part of the comfort factor in my opinion. As an alternative, a Citroen, c5 Aircross SUV. Everyone who gets in mine mentions how soft the seats are, how good the ride is and how quiet it is.

Especially the hard riding 'sporty' ones
On that note, I once had a Lexus CT200h as a courtesy car, which was the most refined medium sized hatchback I've ever been in. It always gets criticised for having a harsh ride but I didn't notice that - but was only driving around 30-40mph suburban roads and sat in traffic etc.I suspect any modern hatchback that has non-sporty suspension, small wheels, petrol engine and enough power so you aren't thrashing it constantly would be perfectly refined and comfortable.
I’ve tried Golf Mk6, Mk7. Boggo versions of both ride pretty well, but there is an underlying Germanic control and firmness. Volvo XC40 was more comfortable than either of them. Honestly I was a bit shocked, its one of the best riding cars I’ve been in, but it still handled well enough and was similarly fun to drive, taking into account the comfort orientation of the suspension.
Volvo C30 I had a facelift 1.6 diesel Drive (which has the same engine as the D2) I still regret selling it.
It was a really nice match of Ford and Volvo. Running gear parts were cheap because you could get the majority from Ford as the engine was shared with the focus. The rest of the car had Volvo's built quality and comfort.
Avoid pre-facelift 1.6d as it has an exhaust additive system that caused nothing but issues for owners, and most people tar both facelift and pre-facelift with the same brush, not realising the engines are different
