Used pickup for peanuts

If you were to choose a used 4x4 double cab with canopy for less then £4k which one would 'probably' be the most reliable and keep on the road without too much pain in the wallet

Used mainly to go long runs on holiday and taking the dogs..

I've seen the following admitedly with high mileage as examples all with full MOT's and good history plus little rust

Nissan Pathfinder
L200 Warrior
Ford Ranger

I'd say going over about 40mph many peanuts would blow away, like the hay lorries you no longer see on the motorway.

A van would be more sensible and you'd probably get more peanuts in it.

A van would be much better for that type of thing.

If you really want a pickup buy the least rusty one at that price.

I have owned many Ford Rangers over the years and rate them highly so if you can find one in your budget do all the usual checks as you would any car....

Most half decent cheap pick ups are being purchased by charities and sent to Ukraine (we have sold a couple to them). Apparently they put a doll in the passenger seat so the Russians assume it’s LHD and fire at the passenger first.

They (by nature) are all heavilly used.

Work purchased a tidy looking 11 reg ex rail track crew cab. Good for bouncing down a track with tools a trailer and a couple of people, but I wouldn't be using it for long journeys or holidays. Not much space for dogs either unless they're riding in the bed.

Initially it looked OK, but after a couple of yrs use it's rusty AF.

For the OP parameters of long journeys, dogs and under £4k and best chance of reliability, I’d be trying to find a good 2005 or younger Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Or if OP is good with mechanics and doesn’t mind high ish running costs, just get the hands down best tool for the job and get an L322 Range Rover.

The Nissan Pathfinder isn't a pickup.
I assume you mean the Navara?

Both these vehicles have well documented expensive timing chain issues and the Navara has has history of chassis breaking in half due to rust. I would avoid them at this budget

Then when you can't find one without terminal rust for under 4K, go and look for a L200, preferably in Animal or Barbarian trim, that's less likely to have been abused. Even then there's probably slim pickings at 4k.

They're nothing like a modern SUV, yes. However they are charming hilarious in a so bad they're good way. BTW, L200s with Super Select can drive in 4wd on tarmac unlike the Ranger/Navara which great in inclement weather and when towing.

The Last L200s (series 5 & 6) aren't bad to drive, did Cumbria to Glocestershire regularly without feeling I'd been pummelled to death.
