Volvo S80 T6 (304 hp)

Good morning,

I am looking for a new commuting car.

Comfort and refinement key. Not worried overly on economy.

Journey about 100 miles per day with majority on motorway.

This is a Japanese import and top spec. Owner has done a fair amount of routine maintenance and it apparently is perfect.

These are really rare, in terms of spec and engine, so not much online about them.

LS460 is what I really want but not many good examples at a sensible price.

Any thoughts on this or other options?

I'd considered these myself, along with the Honda Legend.

What put me off was the lack of numbers sold, making parts and maintenance not that easy.

There was also a GS430 Lexus that may be easier to get than the LS.

Volvo tends to lose a lot of performance through their gearbox somehow. The car doesn't really get that much out of 300+hp.

I'd looked at the GS450h, apart from worries about the battery pack and steering column these seem to be good cars. Sub 6 second to 60 from a 300+hp hybrid.

....find the Yamaha V8 version, just for ultimate contrariness. But yes, as another poster suggested, a Lexus badge is obligatory for an affordable barge....

I had a GS300 for commuting (excellent) and our London car is an IS250 (fine for most stuff but on the smaller side for family duties) and I love a Lexus.

GS450h is prob all I need for commuting but I have always wanted a LS460 for some reason.

Interesting points about the Volvo and parts provision etc. I would have hoped that a turbocharged 3.0 straight 6 would be good, similar to a 335i / 535i N55 but it seems it is rather more asthmatic (rectified with a polestar map?).

I guess I need to keep hunting!

I'd imagine at 100 miles per day in the T6 the fuel bills will be eye-watering.

I'd be heading along the Lexus route myself too.

I’ve always liked the idea of a large-engined S80 or V70 but have been put off the V70 T6 by PH’s Pombd, who has described it as heavy, slow, not nice to drive and thirsty.

If you’d like a V8, I’m selling another four-wheel-drive, large-engined, comfy silver saloon with more power and less miles for less money: an A6 4.2 V8 FSI. I know you’re an ex-GS driver; I test drove a couple of GS430s a few years ago and was quite underwhelmed. I’m sure the LS is far more comfy, but the A6 is similarly comfy to the GS - at least now it’s on lightweight 18s - more precise to drive and has far more rear seat and boot space. Reasonably economical on the motorway, too. May be worth thinking about…

I would use my W212 E350 Cdi but the new work place just nips inside the ULEZ extension.

ZX10 - tracking both of those cars but more than I want to pay. I think up to £5000 because I can treat it as disposable after a couple of years of use (although I would still get some money back no doubt).

Could you not park up just outside and walk in.

I wish the Merc would do 44 mpg! On a 200 mile motorway jaunt, cruise set at 74 mph indicated, I get about 37-38 on the computer.

Genuinely nowhere to park to be able to then walk in. Also need to go into London, school runs etc which will now be inside new ULEZ.

I don’t think it works like that! I still think you need an A6 anyway.

I looked at a couple of GS430s for £4,000 and under previously, though I think that was 2020, so general used car prices were quite a bit lower then.
