Hi!

Long time lurker, first time poster.

I’m thinking of getting a car through a salary sacrifice scheme at work (NHS). The Trust I work for is only allowing cars with emissions of 130g/km or less to be included in the scheme.

I am based in London, and will be using the car for weekends away and day-trips with either 2 adults, a 10 year old, and hopefully a baby, or max of two adults and scuba and/or caving and/or climbing gear. I would also like the car to be relatively fun to drive as well. The car would also need to be ULEZ compliant.

As much as I would love a Honda Civic Type R or Ford Fiesta ST, both are disqualified due to emissions. Of the cars available on the scheme, I am considering the VW Polo in 1.0 TSI guise, the MG MG4 SE (SR), or the Peugeot 208 1.2 GT. I have emailed them about the possibility of getting the MG4 SE (LR) added to the list.

My idea of getting a Morris Minor Traveller (MOT exempt, tax exempt, ULEZ exempt, I can maintain it myself) was vetoed by my better half.

Suggestions?

Not sure if you're aware (as you haven't mentioned it in your post) that a salary sacrifice car is treated as a benefit in kind by HMRC and taxed as if it is a company car. This might change your parameters quite a bit.

As an example, for the same 'net' monthly cost on my scheme through my employer I can either have a Kia Picanto petrol or a Polestar 2! Guess which one I'd prefer?!
