Hi everyone so I travel and drive to different places and looking for a 2006 Ford galaxy 1.9 tdi or a Ford s max 2l tdci that will fit my needs.I am going to be putting high mileage mostly long distance motorway miles on the engine and doing the oil changes and some of the servicing myself. What engine 1.9 tdi or 2l s max tdci stands a good chance of getting to 300.000 400.000 if looked after?.

I'd say take the 2.0d it's the better more refined engine, like ail turbo engines I'd suggest cutting the oil service intervals to every 10k as this will help with the longevity of the engine & get the gearbox oil changed as this will also aid longevity.

I'm not sure what your budget is but you can get the Galaxy with the 2.0tdci.

Whats your budget?
As you may already know the original shape Sharan/Galaxy had the old VW 1.9 engine and these are more than capable of mega miles and generally are not troublesome.
The new shape Galaxy mk2 and Smax came out 05/06, these never had 1.9 they are mostly 2.0 tdi 140 (Peugeot Citroen engine as used also in Ford, Volvo, JLR etc).

I sell a lot of these smax usually they are between 100k and 200k miles, have had 2.0 Galaxy in px with up to 300k.
At big miles on these expect to have the turbo changed, EGR issues and DPF. They cope with big miles fine with regular maintenance, but the older shape model 1.9 would be a safer bet for mega miles as less sensors/warning light issues but obviously an old tech noisy engine v's newer 2.0 models.

They all still drive fine after 200k miles if they have proper service history.

Both will eat up the miles, just try to avoid the automatic gearbox. Go for manual.

Hi so my budget is 1000 to 2000 and with servicing I will be doing the oil changes fuel filter and air filter myself and probably below the recommended interval.I will be blanking the egr off to save all the gunk.I have a diesel at the moment and every so often I push to 3000rpm to 4000rpm to clear out the dpf injectors and anythingthat benefits. Also manual is going to be what I am going for.

Why? Are they bad autos?

Reliability. Manual transmissions are more reliable than automatics. When automatic transmissions go wrong, repair costs can stack up. Manual transmission cars, on the other hand, have a much lower chance of failure, and if something does go wrong are usually much cheaper to fix.

For this budget 100% go for Alhambra/Sharran/Galaxy 1.9 tdi.
This budget is bottom of the barrel / close to scrap smax or worn out ex cab mega miles Galaxy mk2.

As above the old 1.9 is a lot less risky at big miles old age than the newer 2.0 tdi where it’s at the bottom of the market will be a worn out tired dog at this price.

Not necessarily. Manuals have clutches and DMFs that wear out. Torque converter autos don’t.

Also some gearboxes, be they manual or auto, can have weaknesses, design flaws, etc.

Many autos are extremely robust, many high powered drag racing cars use auto transmissions.

OP, you are restricting yourself hugely just concentrating on a single model.

With your budget you can't be too fussy.

Do you need an MPV?

Does it have to be an S Max/Galaxy?

Hi GreatGranny yes it needs to be a mpv because when I am away say Highlands and in some remote places hopefully abroad as well I will be traveling and sleeping in the vehicle.

Have you considered a 2005 Honda CRV 2.2cdti engine
The rear seats fold up and leaves massive flat floor for sleeping

I traded our new shape 2.0tdci in at 180k, having bought it at 70k. It had a tough life, lugging family, canoes, bikes and more, including a few trips to south of France from Scotland and regular stints pulling a double wheel trailer at about the tow limit of the car.
In that time we had wear on suspension and brakes (it is a heavy car), a wobble with the electrics and a thermostat which gave up. Other than that it ran trouble free. It was still on original clutch. Spares were not too expensive, all things considered.

However, in the last 6 months it started sound ever more tractor like, smoked a touch on start up (I and garage thought the turbo was wearing) and started having random bits of trim fall off, and then the central locking packed up in two doors. With a looming cam belt, more suspension bushings and then suddenly the clutch slipped one day, I decided to bail.

I would happily buy again.
