Taxing a car before I have it

Evening all.
I will be collecting a new car to me in a few weeks from a private seller, deposit paid, transfer balance the day before.
I have already insured it for me to drive it home but will need to tax it the day before (preferable)or there before I drive away.
Can I do this if log book not in my name, it’s probs my simple, but not done this before.
Any help greatly appreciated.

I think all you need is the 12 digit number from the green ‘new keeper’ slip from the log book. Then you can tax it online the day before.

The tax will expire as soon as the new keeper (you) is registered with the DVLA and will be refunded to the previous owner. So there's no point in paying to tax it now if the V5 is not yet in your name. You can do it all on the same day on your phone.

As soon as you fill out the online database for the V5 to record the sale you can follow the link to the dvla site for tax, input the new registered keepers green slip number and you can tax it instantly off that and drive away

Be aware that the online service (to notify DVLA about ownership changes), is only available from 7am to 7pm.

I’m sure catches out a few on a late evening.

Is it illegal to pick up a car then tax it the next day from home? Is that allowable (a bit like taking a car for an MoT than has no MoT?

Seems a potential issue waiting for the name on the V5 to change before taxing it?

It's not a bit like taking a car for an MOT that has no MOT. It's more like buying a car with no MOT, driving it home and intending to MOT it the next day.

The car will retain valid VED until they receive notification of a change of keeper. So there's no disadvantage in buying it a day later.

A lot of articles insist you MUST buy VED immediately. Well, not always. One chap I bought a car from insisted on posting the V5c to Swansea, he didn't do 'online.' So I left it a few days, which meant I 'gained' a month because it had been the last week of the month.

Except the old owner is at risk of paying for the new owners speeding/parking etc. fines.

Last time I bought privately the seller agreed to leave it a day before notifying the DVLA of the change of keeper so it would show as taxed on any ANPR cameras.

But I would hope not taxing it would be nothing more than a technicality so long as you taxed it in the same month as collecting it - tax always starts from the first of the month!

I will be taxing it the day I collect it at their house.
Then the drive home, cant wait.

The car ended up being 'untaxed' for a couple of days before I noticed the change of keeper had taken place. I bought VED from the 1st of the next month. DVLA didn't so anything, after all they'd already received VED for the previous month! There isn't legally any 'grace' period but a vehicle has to be untaxed for several weeks before they take any action.

Buying a car that is SORN or from a trader where it is 'in trade' and untaxed is different of course. You need to buy it immediately to drive it home.

I would not getaway driving the car home if I didn’t tax before hand, insurance would be void etc etc
