Looking at a Mazda 6 being sold by a reputable local seller (not private) and I did an HPI check which shows a couple of odd things. The dealers photos show the reg fitted to the car as ST17 KHH.

The current plate was transferred to this vehicle on 06/02/2022

M7GNM was registered to this vehicle on 18/10/2020
This licence plate was recorded by an insurer as a total loss (write-off)
The total loss (write-off) was recorded on 05/10/2020 against a MAZDA 6 SPORT N
ST17KHH was registered to this vehicle on 28/04/2017
This licence plate was recorded by an insurer as a total loss (write-off)
This license plate has been recorded by the DVLA as scrapped.

If the vehicle description does not match the vehicle you are checking, please get in touch so we can investigate this for you.

Recorded against VIN
Description MAZDA 6 SPORT N
Date 05/10/2020
Category Vehicle Recorded As DVLA SCRAPPED MARKER On Condition Alert Register.

Date recorded Recorded by Mileage reading Total
20/05/2020 VOSA 33170 33170
24/08/2020 VOSA 33751 33751
13/04/2021 VOSA 35604 35604
18/11/2021 VOSA 28031 28031
08/12/2022 VOSA 38444 38444

Obviously at the minute I'm not going to go any further, but i do like the car and if it's just some kind of DVLA error that can easily be corrected by the seller before I go any further I'd rather not just pass up on it.

It also shows on the gov.uk site as not having been taxed since 1st October 2021, and MOT expired on 12th April 2022. Logbook last issued on 19 October 2020.

I'll let the seller know tomorrow over the phone before going to see it on Saturday but can any explanation be drawn from this before that? I am curious.

Surely there are other Mazda 6 without a 'curious' past?

Plenty yes, I think curiosity has gotten me on this one.

I'm fairly sure I can't be bothered to get involved with it but I think I should at least point it out to the dealer so someone else doesn't end up with a mistake.

Should one of those mileages say 38,031 rather than 28,031 ?

Don't think so. There's no record of an MOT on that date with that mileage on the gov.uk site, so I think it's possibly a different car that gotten mixed in with this one records wise. Maybe the first owner took his private plate with him and put it on another Mazda 6 and that one got its data mixed up with this one somehow?

Given how soon the personal plate was registered after the total loss record it feels like there’s an admin error to me.

Is the history check you carried out one that includes salvage photos?

One other unusual thing is the vehicle enquiry site shows the car as no MOT since April 22 whereas the check MOT site shows it as MOTd until March.

Do a VCheck as this will normally show a picture of the actual car that was written off then you can be sure.

Tried a basic 5 pound VCheck as suggested and no record of it being scrapped or written off by insurance. So question is which do I trust? And why are HPIs details messed up, poor given their check was 20 quid...

I always recommend the £10 one but it's strange it doesn't show up as it s the other way round.

Would not trust vcheck reports as they are only based on scraped data from a few salvage auctions. Instead trust a full HPI check.

The point you need to read is the total loss being recorded on the VRM and VIN rather than just the VRM which would imply it’s a different car, possibly the owners last one that they replaced like for like after a total loss.

ST17 KHH is a Red Mazda 6 2.0 petrol (2017), mot expires on the 06 March 2023 and it has been untaxed since 01 October 2021 (odd)

Mot history is also a little odd, it failed on the 20 May 2020, then failed again on the 24 August 2020 but passed the next day.

Last MOT mileage was 45604 on the 07 March 2022.

M7 GNM is on a Toyota Rav 4 which had a V5 issued nearly a year ago (March 2022), so I doubt the plate transfer has anything to do with it.

That just smacks of it being in the dealer network for ages getting MOT'ed etc then passed on. Never sold because of its dodgy history. Slip on a pair of running shoes and forget about it.

It's a 7 year old car by this stage? If it's in good shape and cheap you can still buy and enjoy it even if it has a problematic history. The risks are much reduced when a car has lost a lot of the original showroom value.

An explanation would be worth having though. If the dealer is able to say what has gone on and point out what is wrong with the record maybe it can be fixed. If he just denies it all and wants top money for it then it would be a bad idea to go ahead.

The issue is that it is not cheap, for £14k and with others available, why take the risk on a dodgy car.

I have just run an HPI on that car and it all looks fine to me. No idea where you are getting the total loss markers.
