Mileage Discrepancy on Car Looking to buy

Bit of a lurker here. Its been a great source of information over the years.

I'm looking to purchase a used car... did a HPI check and there are discrepancies. I've read that NMR can make mistakes.

Just wanted to get some experienced views here. I did a little table so that I could easily check/compare.

The two discrepancies come when the car is moved on and off a private plate. One on an actual MOT record and the other from a VOSA recording.

Is there anything I should be checking beyond this? How could the mistakes have come about?

Any thoughts appreciated. I'm going down to see it either tomorrow or tues.

Looks like user inputed error all day long

That 14350 should have been 34350


And 27721 and 77721? Or maybe a bit less?


Also boils down to the car, if a boring run of the mill daily , I wouldn't worry too much..

I'd say those are two data entry errors.

The first should be 34 odd thousand, and the second has gone in as a 2 rather than a 7.

If it's enough to cause you concern it will be enough to cause concern to potential buyers when you come sell.

That's what I was leaning towards, just wondered if the discrepancies being at the point of changing plates both times had any meaning.

The only thing with the 27,721 being 77,721 was that it was recorded as that prior to the MOT occurring where the mileage was recorded at 77,049 but I'm inclined to think that it's not uncommon for there to be small differences based on how its recorded.

Is it usual for the HPI check to not show up recordings of the period when it was on the private plate? Is there any further verification that can be done aside from relying on MOT history / Service history? How do garages ensure that recordings for cars are done on both plates - are they tied together?


I guess when it comes to sell, I'd just be transparent from the initial enquiry and provide the info I have recorded along with the service history etc.

I'll tell you my experience of cars with mileage discrepancies, most dealers simply wont buy them for stock, even if it's an obvious mistake.

Bear that in mind if it's an expensive car.

Interesting re dealers, I've always sold privately and each person has their own risk level that they are prepared to take, so I envisage if I'm seriously considering it that others will in future but understand it may put off some.


According to seller has FSH with regular services. Have asked if he can send me photos of it before the trip so I can also look at mileage.

Its a Mini Cooper S (R56).

Errors happen, I bought a car that people were throwing their hands up in horror, when I could see the MOT tester had entered the last three digits of the VIN number as the last three digits of the mileage.

I had through photos of all works / services / invoices last night.

Cross referenced them - here is the updated table.

Its strange that there isnt any documentation on the years where there are the anomalies.

At the moment it shows 29,592 on the 19th July 2011 MOT and then the next history documentation supplied is a service document for the 26th Aug 2013 stating 30,015 miles.

That's showing a 2 year period with less than 500 miles.

It is a convertible so not uncommon for them to not be used at times I guess.
