Newest, cheapest, fuel efficient estate?

I'm aiming to spend around £5k, but can go up to £10k.
I need something reliable that I don't have to be precious about. High mileage cars considered. Fuel efficiency is key. Age wise I'm looking around 2015 onwards.

The car will be used for daily duties. I commute a couple of times a week around the M25, doing a 50 mile round trip. It will also be used for runs to the tip and carrying various large items.

I've seen a 2015 Passat estate with 200k on the clock for around £5k. Is this going to give me grief?

Cavernous and the diesel can do pretty high MPG.

Isn't a fabia the same size as a polo? Will it swallow a 2.4m length of 2x4, or a 8x2 sheet of ply?

fk you're not wrong. They could have tacked a box with a tail lift on and I'd not be able to tell the difference.

honda civic 1.6 diesel. we've got one, been an ace car. 60mpg motorway. we're getting rid, only because i want a big 4x4 for towing. its a 2017 car, I think its only worth £10k. can't see anything else that will touch it.

I don't mind putting it over the front passenger seat or between the front seats. Roof rails would help otherwise.

How would a 320d compare? The mileage would be around 100k compared to 60k for the civic.

A 320d will be ok, make sure you get the facelift with the more reliable B series diesel engine

Engines in these are good for around 250k if looked after properly, but at these mileages other bits might be starting to go like the clutch/flywheel on the manuals, suspensions bits and bushes, etc.

£10k gets a 2017 civc with 80k miles.

I’d spend as much of your £10k as it takes to get a great quality, lowish mileage Passat.

Managed to get a 3m kitchen worktop into our Passat estate, plus many many full cabin tip runs, the thing is cavernous with the seats down.
