5 Series Touring 2.0D. Owner feedback

Dear readers,

I am looking at replacing my 2011 X5 with one of these estates (needs to be ULEZ compliant). The 5 series would be more economical than my current X5 which is a welcome plus, despite being 'lower down'. It needs to be able to take 3 young children in the back at weekends too.

Has anyone owned one they can advise/give me some feedback on? Budget I'd say £15-20k max. Extra's needed would be auto folding mirrors. Of course a sunroof and HK upgrade sound system would be ideal!

I ran a 2015 F11 2.0d auto for 143k miles until last year and it was superb. It had a couple of EGR cooler recalls, new rear suspension bags (not expensive), and diff seals. Otherwise just servicing. It was quick enough (but I did replace it with a 3.0), did 42mpg in varied use mainly long runs. Mine had pro-nav but no HK, or sunroof, or folding mirrors.

Will the 2.0d be ULEZ compliant op?

We had a F11 touring for 4 years with the 2.0d engine and that was utterly faultless. Only sold it as mrs A3 wanted something higher up.

Ours was SE spec with a pan roof which suited it quite well as a comfy family cruiser.

2 child seats fitted across the back with room to spare, 3 may be a tight squeeze depending on how old yours are.

I have a 2019 520d G31 with nice spec now on 32k. Averaged a real 51mpg, is quick enough and amazingly refined. Tax, servicing and tyres are expensive but the rear tyres are only just worn and the front has plenty of tread. Ad blue even lasted 28k before filling. I drove back from Chamonix to the midlands on one tank of fuel last year with 150 mile range left. Had a few niggles under warranty but nothing major.

Only issue is it feels a bit big. The G31 are now sub £20k and worth every penny

Hi, thank you for your comments. So the only more economical point over the x5 is the mpg which will be considerably better and road tax cheaper at £165 p/a. The servicing, tyres are just as expensive then? Also I’ve been reading about this additional tax for cars over £40k. Did this affect you?

Yes the 2.0D will be ULEZ compliant as it’s Euro 6 rating. My kids are very young, 6, 4 and 2. The eldest is now on a booster seat whilst the other two are in car seats. I think I would sacrifice the comfort a bit for the M sport. I just don’t seem many of these estates on the road but every other car is a 4x4.

Thank you for posting. I need the folding mirrors as there are so many reckless delivery vans on the roads these days. I’d definitely only buy with fsh and no more than 3 owners from new. It seems if you stretched to £20k you can pick up a 2018 E 31 model

Anything registered after April 2017 has luxury tax applied if the list price is was over £40k. This is on top of the normal £165ish tax. It goes up a little each year but I’ve just paid £520 to tax a 2 litre diesel! My M6 was less. After 6 years it reverts back to normal tax, so early G30/G31 will soon be cheap tax again.

Tyres are £300 each for Michelin Primacy Runflats. Extended warranty about £800/year.

All in all I think it’s worth the cost.

That’s really helpful thanks. Coor, you really are being hit for a diesel these days aren’t you! Glad to hear you say you think it’s worth it all in all. I just need to sit in one and see for myself. Three kids in the back should be ok!
