Hi guys,

I bought a new car and am now worried thinking that the seller has committed fraud by giving me the older version V5 new keeper slip! I've tried ringing them and they said they are out with family so they will ring me tomorrow...

I used the slip to tax my vehicle but it says the logbook number is not valid!! They said that they have sent out the V5 (Via WhatsApp) and they received confirmation letter?? But on the gov.uk website, it says the last logbook was issued 2 months ago!!!?!

I paid via cash - so proof via text and i've also recorded 1 call where I said 'Hi i bought your car 2 weeks ago' and they answered back to that.

Please help!

Ps - I will be changing the ghost immobiliser password on the car but i need a way to make sure i am the owner of this as i am!!!

Let us know what happens when they call you tomorrow.

It's only a few hours away.

Can't you complete a V62?
Did you hpi check the car?

Was the complete V5 there or did they just give you the green slip?
Was there anything shown on the Hpi?

I bought a HPI / write off check before buying the car and Autotrader said it had no finance

I've not done the v62 yet but I will be doing this soon - I'm just worried, what if the seller acts funny and says they never sold it? Even though i've got the messages and calls

They ripped the new keeper slip and handed it to me - but it's the V5 slip before they changed number plate as it gives an older date

So long as you’ve done your due diligence / got cover and got a receipt the V5 is pretty straight forward to sort. You can call the DVLA worst case

Thank you, I will try DVLA - im just worried if he gets letter after the V62 claiming he never sold the vehicle but thankfully I've got alot of evidence to ensure this won't happen. He only gave me 1 key and said he would send me the other key when he found it which worries me now thinking about it.

I have parked the car in my garage and will be changing the immobiliser key soon, it cost me £15k so hopefully the worst doesnt happen

I'd say the chances are he has just used the wrong V5, hence the issues. If he was about to steal the car back and pretend he didn't sell it to you I think he'd have done thinks a little more underhand.

Wait. You bought a car for £15K cash?

If I was buying a £1,500 car I'd want to be paying through BACS.

My last two cars have cost me >£15K. I even spent £3 on a land registry check to confirm they lived where they claimed they live

Had this before, not too uncommon, people remove a private plate, mess up the V5’s and give an older V5 from before it had a private plate.

That being said, why did you not do the V5 change and tax at their house when buying the car?

Last time it happened to me, me and the seller realised when doing the V5 online, but wasn’t a big issue( I always request a signed receipt either way) as you can either fill out a V62 or get the seller to request a new V5 that he can then photo and send to you(most times it’s easier to just do a V62).

Thanks Marc, really appreciate your reply. I'm afraid I don't know what i was thinking - lesson learnt on getting receipt next time...

If they’ve just changed the plate the new V5 might not have arrived from the DVLA? They might think the old one will be the same as the new one. I’m hoping it’s a genuine error on their part.

Thanks for your reply. The seller is still being co-operative at the moment so im going to see what happens tomorrow in our phone call - a waiting game, however he said today he received a letter from DVLA about something?

Do DVLA send a letter once they receive a V5 before they update it on their records as it still says last V5 issued 2 months ago :/

I've just noticed the road I bought the car from has plenty of CCTV should there be any investigation in future...

You didn't buy a NEW car you bought a car.

The fact it is new to you is irrelevant. smile

No they don’t but a v5 doesn’t prove ownership so the v5 is not a big deal.

I would be driving back there for the spare key more to the point.

I will change the ghost immobiliser password and put a tracker on the car as a safeguarding measure. I bought the car from London and now in Scotland
