I think we've narrowed our choice for a 7 seater family car to a Skoda Kodiaq but we're trying to choose between petrol and diesel. I've driven 2 examples - the 1.5TSI and a 200bhp 2.0 diesel. I felt the bigger diesel suited the heavy car better and the 1.5 was less responsive and had to be revved a bit more to get to the power. However I'm concerned about resale values of diesels, possibly bigger bills e.g. DPFs and even though they have higher mpg figures, diesel is more expensive at the pumps and the majority of our journeys are short. There is a 190bhp petrol but they are fairly thin on the ground.

Any thoughts? We also considered the XC90 and the X5 but for our budget (35 ish) you can get a Kodiaq 2-3 years newer.

We've had a 1.5 TSI DSG for 3.5 years/40k miles and its been a perfect family wagon. 32-33 local MPG, 45 MPG on a run. Just enough power to lug the weight around, it actually feels quicker than my Mazda 3 2.0 petrol with the same power and less weight due to the turbo torque.

My wife is on her second Kodiaq 2.0 petrol DSG in L&K spec. We test drove the smaller petrol and it just didn't feel powerful enough for a big car. It will happily do mid 30s mpg in most conditions and really is a beautiful thing. If you can get it within your budget try and get one with the matrix lights, they're incredible.

What's your usage as that will answer which fuel to go for if your usage does suit petrol then I'd suggest going for the 2.0T as it's better suited to the weight/size of car.

I’ve just been through the same.
Similar useage profile. Just done the first 500 miles in the 1.5tsi dsg at 42 mpg but that included a few motorway runs so slightly better. I’ve come from a diesel transporter that did 36 ish on similar useage
Agree on the lights and the large sat nav with CarPlay etc and the leather is great also (and heated)
More tourque would be nice sometimes but it does shift if you use the throttle. It’s a petrol not a diesel so you have to drive differently.
The 2.0 petrol would be nice but it’s 4wd only which I didn’t need. Might look into mapping the 1.5 in time but at the moment it has the same bhp as my transporter did so feels like a sports car in comparison!

These Mazda 2.0 have the weirdest power delivery…

Comparing a Transporter to a (what year was the transporter?) to a Kodiaq isn't really comparing apples with apples.

I know but it’s my comparison so I’m very pleased!
Compared to the Touran 1.6 TDi DSG (2013) the Kodiaq feels like a step up in quality and is much more spacious

Thanks. I think with our useage (mostly short trips with the odd long distance holiday) and the fact that we don't tow anything means a petrol is probably more suitable. I thought the 1.5TSI was fine, I just wondered if fully laden it might need a bit more power. I'm hopefully trying the petrol 2.0 tomorrow so will see if it's worth it to have a car that is 2 year older though admittedly with a few more extras.

Ran a 1.5 DSG Kodiaq for 2 years, was not quick but drove very well and averaged about 34mpg over the 2 years we had it - no regrets about going small petrol

The 2.0 will certainly be a step up, and not much worse on fuel. I'd probably have gone for a 2.0 if it were my car, but my wife drives it 90% of the time so a 1.5 is fine for our use case. She managed to get caught speeding in a 1.0 Aygo so you know, best not to give her too much power! biggrin

Thought I'd bump this thread instead of starting a new one. Does anyone own a 2.0 TSI 4x4 Kodiaq and can give comment?

I am looking for a seven seat car, coming from a C7 Allroad.

Thanks!

I have the TDI 190 4x4 (Scout variant). I much preferred the diesel when I test drove.

I went for a 70 reg 2.0 TSI 4x4 L&L in the end and don't regret it at all. Quite luxurious inside and the 190 petrol has decent power as well as being fairly quiet. I can get close to 40 mpg on long journeys but round town more like sub 30. Only gripe really is the slight hesitancy sometimes from the DSG in setting off in 1st but it's rare enough not to bother me. Seems to have held it's value well too since we bought it last year.

Thank you both - helpful.

I've just got off the phone to a car-selling friend who says his sister has a 2.0 TSI and really likes it, and he himself has bought and sold a few. Price wise they are "strong" but isn't everything at the moment!

I've seen a 2018 TSI Sportline with 30K miles for £29K. I've called the dealer as I have a couple of questions on spec. Seems like virtual dash came in around 2019 or 2020 but I'm not bothered about that - the main screen and nav will be more up-to-date than the Allroad so I can live without the colour DIS.

I paid 33k for a 70 reg on 15k miles from a Ford dealer which I thought was a bit much at the time but values seem to have held. Mine doesn't have the digital dash which I wasn't bothered about. The panaoramic sunroof is really nice as are the heated wheel and seats (though not in this weather). It has wireless Android Auto and Apple Carplay so I just use Google Maps for nav.

The 1.5TSI has a dry clutch DSG compared to the 2.0 TSI/TDI. If you plan to keep it longterm there's a difference in the reliability/longevity of those.

Have a 2.0 tsi sportline. Has been faultless. Economy is better than our last car which was a v60 t5 on Santander lease. Average around 28mpg around town.

Thanks all.
Budget creep has set in on the browsing.
There's the TSI Sportline mentioned above and now a blue TDI L&K with beige leather and sunroof now in the mix.

I think cruise is standard on these isn't it. Adaptive I'm not bothered about as am living without it on the Allroad. I'm waiting for the TSI dealer to call me back as I've a couple of questions but does anyone know if the foot swiping boot opening on these is standard? A friend had it on his S8 and often mentioned it above anything else!
