Mpg hero car wanted for business use

I do 35k a year, which usually involves travelling 60-120miles to destination and then lots of short journeys, around 12-20 visits before driving back.

I currently drive a 2005 w203 c class c200cdi estate. I get, according to the car, 45.1mpg. it has no 6 gear on the auto box which ruins motorway economy above 66-67 mph.

I need to replace it for a ulez compatible car for as little money as possible. I'm conscious of depreciation as any car I have I will ruin the value of.

Auto is non negotiable, which causes problems as not all are as reliable as others, such as the powershift used by ford. I'm also not sure about the longevity of VW's DSG.

I'm not bothered at all about looks, power etc. It just needs to be auto, excellent mpg-60 plus at least, and good build quality.

I've looked at cat N's as budget is 9k tops really for diesels, but the Lexus CT200h has come to my attention as well, but I'm not sure about whether the mpg will be as claimed..

Any ideas ? Or do you have anything for sale that might fit?

I have a Corolla 1.8 hybrid that's used mainly for short journeys around town (I believe it's a slightly updated powertrain to the one used in the CT200H).

I reset the MPG counter when I bought it, and about 3k miles later it's showing an average of 70. So far I'm pretty impressed with the way it sips fuel.

I'd note that on a motorway run it's less efficient because it's using the engine most of the time,

The Lexus CT200h running gear was based on the Toyota Auris hybrid that ran from 2009-12. We had both in my family at one point. I preferred the Auris - less luxury and felt like you were sitting on it which suited me. In the CT200h the seats are lower and it has a more solid feel.

You'll struggle to get 60mpg out of a CT200h. We were in the low 50s overall and slightly higher on the motorway.

What about a Prius? That should get more mpg. About 10 years old under 80k should in budget and they do go on forever. Just need to get used to the odd handling.

The Corolla will be more than the 9k budget. It's predecessor, the Auris hybrid, could be an option but it would need to be a 2nd gen one to have any hope of achieving the 60 mpg target.

Did similar milage for many years in a 320ed F30 BMW returning 80mpg and only needing regular services, 4 sets of tyres and one set of brakes all round in 150k miles. Get one with the auto, 16in wheels and a nice spec and it is the perfect long distance commuter.
