All,

I saw a privately owned car last weekend. The car has been HPI checked and been inspected. It all checks out.

I viewed the car at the vendors home address and he had the v5C. He applied to take take his private plate off online, which went through and he is now waiting for the updated V5C. No doubt, the Postal Strike has not helped.

I really could do with collecting the car this weekend. Is there any major risks of buying the car (outright purchase) with the old V5C and the online proof that DVLA have approved the transfer?

Thanks in advance,
Rog

You will not be able to inform DVLA of change of keeper using the old V5C. That is more of a risk for the seller!

The plan was that he would send me the latest V5C in the coming days and the change of keeper would be applied for then.

My thinking is is that I should be safe in that I have a logbook, bill of sale, copy of the vendor's id, proof of payment and physical possession of the vehicle.

Thoughts?

He will be liable for any speeding fines/parking fines that you may pick up. He won't be able to prove he sold the car.

Not saying you would break the law, but I wouldn't let you take the car, even if you were my best mate!

Understood. Thinking about it, once he has the new logbook, could he take out finance on the car...?

I wouldn't know, but yeah I suppose he could do a logbook loan if they're still a thing.

Obviously, the V5c very clearly states that the registered keeper is not necessarily the owner.

Not if the receipt stated day/ date / time etc. He could write back with the details on the receipt and get the fines sent onto the new owner.

But would you be bothered with the inevitable to and fro and aggro?

I wouldn't.
