Minimum dealer warranty requirement

Hello All

What is the minimum level of warranty that a used car dealer must provide? I have recently purchased a classic car but as it's so old I'm not sure what to expect of the dealer. Facts are as follows:

- Car looks and drives fine, and I took it for a test drive before purchase.
- 1984 XJ6 Series 3 4.2 - 38 years old!
- Dealer drove car to deliver it to me on 29th July.
- I've done 145 miles in it since just pottering around.
- Dealer has generally modern stock and this was an unusual car for them to retail.

Here's the issue: there is an engine oil leak which I spotted on 31st July, 2 days after delivery when I first took the car for a run, but it has only just occurred to me that there may be some recourse to the dealer.

I'd appreciate advice on how to proceed:

(i) Contact dealer and say they need to fix it, but they are 100 miles away.
(ii) Just sort myself and forget about it, it's an old car and modern warranty expectations are not realistic?

They don't have to supply any warranty beyond the statutory rights which may not yield much for such an old car.

Amy warranty supplied is usually worthless with independents anyway.

(ii) But fire off a polite and reasonable email asking if the dealer would contribute as it was bought so recently?

OP forget about 'warranty'

Have a read up on the Consumer Rights Act 2015 as it applies to used cars. (google will help)

In short, if a fault becomes apparent in the first 30 days the dealer must fix it or refund you.

Except they leaked when new, it doesn't affect the use of the car, the Dealer can charge for use of the car and you probably have to return it to them.

Again, rights aside be reasonable - It's a 40 year old car which leaked from the factory!!
