Hi all

Just asking for some opinions and a sense check on the whether the following should be avoided as its got a couple of red flags

Its a 2017 Hyundai Tuscon - 30k miles. One owner.

Issue is, it's first service was after 2 years and 21k miles.

2nd service this month - 2.5yrs after the first (30k miles). By Cazoo so just an oil and filter (ie not a full Hyundai one)

So definitely not according to schedule and voiding the manufacturers warranty almost immediately.

How big an issue is this. Would probably keep car 5 years and get a full service done immediately so resale not a concern, more concerned about lack of fresh lube for 2 year periods.

Final potential red flag is its done almost zero miles in last 6 months and the tax expired in April so seems to have been dormant.

TIA

To me a lack of service history is a sign of general neglect and always makes me think it's just not been looked after very well. I'd avoid.

Unless it's massively cheaper than all others available, I'd avoid it.

The Tucson is kind of car which is often bought by people who know nothing about cars, or the requirement to maintain them properly so it's likely that the recorded services is all it's had rather than this being a case of bad record keeping.

I'd also buy one with higher mileage in preference - a 5000 mile a year newish car tends to have been used on lots of very short journeys (school run etc) and nothing else, so is as likely to be as worn as one which has done a more average mileage.

My final reason to avoid it would be if it has the 1.6 litre petrol engine, which is a pretty awful thing. The engine is completely gutless and really inefficient as well. I struggled to better 35mpg in them when they were the hire car of choice 4-5 years ago. The diesel ones go much better and manage a typical 55ish mpg with no issue.

Its the 1.4 Turbo which is pretty nippy by all accounts. Wife just wrote off her ix35 and wants the same thing again.

Think i need to keep looking but being car-less in the summer holidays is not much fun so time of the essence.

Take a view on it. Has it not been serviced or is it just missing. I just bought a 50k 67 plate car unseen and shock it had no documented service history apart from the dealer service it was about to go through.

I'd be going mostly on cost. If the car is significantly cheaper because of it then I'd say that's worth saving some money given you're keeping the car long enough for resale to not matter. Although 2 years and 21k miles is over manufacturers guidelines, I'd say the chances of that causing a major problem are still small. The type of miles it did - motorway miles vs short trips to town - is more important and you won't have any idea of that when buying used anyway.

Having said all that, when I look at cars on Cazoo I tend to find the pricing is very average and not hugely competitive. If that's the case then probably best to shop around.

I’m finding the same issue with a lot of cars that are being sold by Cazoo, Cinch etc. You dig into the service history and soon find stuff is missing and like you were looking at Hyundai / Kia for the warranty.

Both do state that a missing service may not necessarily invalidate the warranty but you can bet that they will fight any claims that bit harder if something can be relayed back to a missing service.

What is the manufacturers schedule? 2yr/20k Mile intervals aren't uncommon these days

Manufacturers warranty would be up now anyway on this one so I was more concerned with a big issue down the line due to old oil etc.

what a great shout. I had looked around and everything was coming back with 1y/10k etc, but you got me thinking again....

Called my local Hyundai and they said it changed in September 2017 and before this it was 2y/20k so its bang up to date and actually still in manufacturer warranty (for another 2 month at least).

Now bought

Cheers all!

I found the same I found a really nice looking Merc C class hybrid and they were offering me good money on my car and I was very close to going for it then I realised the service history was nearly none existent in the first 2-3 years so I walked away so to speak.

At least you know what it's service history really is as opposed to buying from a main dealer where the salesman has stamped up the book himself - yes, I know for a fact that it happens & with many dealers not passing on service receipts due to GDPR & the name & address of the previous owner no longer showing when you get the V5 through, it's easily done. A car I looked at a couple of years ago had a missed service & the salesfanny offered to stamp the book if it bothered me & was hindering the deal being done. Clueless! Large well known Scottish car dealer. wink

Ah that’s interesting, Tucson petrol was something we were looking at too.

I’d personally service it when I got it home and start fresh, at least an oil and filter change for peace of mind.
