Buying a car with private plate

I'm about to see a car tomorrow that I might buy right away, but the car is on a private plate and the seller says "it'll be reverted back to it's original plate once sold". I've never bought a used car in this situation - how long does it take for the plate change back to original? Is it a complicated process? I need a car quickly and I'd rather leave it if it's going to take time or be complicated...

The private player is moved straight onto retention/other vehicle but I'm not sure what happens with the v5,

I’ve only ever done this when buying from a dealer but once the seller transfers the plate to retention a year appropriate reg is issued at the same time and then also a certificate is issued to obtain new physical number plates. A new V5 is then issued obviously.
Providing all done on line the transfer and new number and certificate is pretty much instant.

If done online a replacement plate is issued immediately, it will take 3 or 4 days though for the new V5 to arrive with the current owner though, only then, can the keeper change be done.

If done online, the plate gets taken off and the old age related plate gets applied instantly.

The new V5 however isn’t instant. The seller has to wait until he has the new V5 with the age related plate on before he can effect the change of registered keeper.

Really the seller should have removed their private plate prior to the sale if they wish to retain it because it creates an additional complication. If I was a buyer I wouldn't be prepared to complete the sale without doing the whole V5 transfer taking place which cannot be done when the seller is wanting to retain their plate first.

Presumably you’re going to need to get number plates made up too, before you can drive it.
