Hi all,

So I've got use of my mum's motability car, I drive her wherever, and she lets me use it for my work commute. I pay her the cost of the car, and put petrol in. I don't have to pay insurance, tax, any repairs are taken care of, and tyres are replaced free of charge at Kwik Fit.

With my new job, my head's been turned and I want a new car, or more reasonably, I want *my* car. I've been debating between a Saab 9-5 Aero Hot manual or a Mazda 3 MPS.

I'd be on the hook for everything with them, not just petrol and the monthly payment to my mum, but I'd have more power, and it'd be a car enthusiasts car, not just a crossover with a bit of power (Kia xCeed with the 1.5 engine)

Should I go with my heart and get a more petrolhead car, or just stick with the Kia?

How daft are you being?

Why would you want to not drive a boring free car but pay for and drive another boring car?

If you've got use of a "normal" car, why not get something exciting as a second car? Convertible, genuine sports car, etc.

i'm going to bite - Aren't you breaking the rules of a mobility car currently?

"The car is used by, or for the benefit of, the disabled person. This does not mean that the disabled person needs to be in the car for every journey. In practice, this means other named drivers in the household can use the car for shopping and other routine activities, as long as the disabled customer will benefit. "

The exciting car, would be for me, and then the boring car would go to my little brother to shuttle my mum about

The hot hatch/quick estate is sorta necessary for all my day to day stuff like tip runs and wheelchair space, so rules out the actual fun stuff!

I am, for the main purpose it is used for the benefit of the disabled person, just also used for me to get to and from work

No, and it's a risk that is taken when I go to and from work.

So the answer here is buy yourself any car you want / can afford and use the mobility one for it's intended purpose.

You're right to be honest.

£5k is my budget, don't mind mileage more about the condition really. Requirements would be quick, and manual. That's it really. Looking at the Saab and Mazda as they're more left field and you don't see them that often (Or I don't haha)

It's a bit odd, if you look at the insurance cert then there are no such clauses included however just because the insurance would cover it you will likely lose out on another Motability car. Also to muddy the waters I can use Mrs geeks one for going to and from work (I don't for clarity I have two cars of my own to chose from smile ) as I pay the mortgage and this is indeed classed as a benefit to her, we checked with Motability on this one as I had a week where I had to be in the office and at the time had no car of my own but ended up not needing to.

Yeah, I clarified with the dealer, and then Mota and they said that so long as it benefits my mum, then it's okay as I'd be working to earn money to pay her keep and the PIP money. Which does benefit her? It's weird but it is a cheap method of motoring

Saab and Mazda are both a bit boring for a second, fun sort of car.

Standard PH answer here.

Clio 172/182, Mazda MX5, Megane Sport 225 if you want a turbo hot hatch, all fast, fun, petrol and manual. 5 cylinder Focus ST is brimming with character, bit lardy on the bends but a proper hooligan of a hot hatch if that's your thing. Had a few 172s and a 5 pot ST, loved driving them all.

Thanks for the list!

I'm 6'3" with size 13 feet and a bit of a fatty so the clios and MX5s are out really unfortunately.

Might have another look at the Megane and the Focus.

Thanks again!

A SAAB 9-3 2.8T with a remap is crazy fast, once it has traction that is lol. But in gear acceleration is probably the most useful anyway. Tax will be high if getting a later year. Quite the sleeper though, destroyed my F30 330d on the motorway.

I'd actually go for a warm hatch (the Mazda can have timing chain issues) you'll end up with something newer that's still swift & a good steer.

Thanks!
