Advice pls - "new" Used Peugeot 5008, engine rattling

Hi all,

Have just bought a 2020 plate 5008 (needed for 3x isofix across the back seat), 20,000 on the clock from a used and approved garage 200 miles away. It still has 15 months on the warranty and was delivered last week.

All fine and no issues for a few days but is now making a loud rattling sound (coming from engine), very audible in the cabin even. I need to (and the Peugeot garage I got it from want me to) get it investigated asap and go from there, but I'm unable to get it seen by a more local Peugeot garage for two weeks. By then, my 14 days' right to return the car under distance selling will have expired.

Clearly it could be something minor but could be a more serious issue.

Do people think this is a red flag even if a minor problem or only if it's something more serious, and should I wait until I can get it into a Peugeot garage to have a look? Could potentially get the selling garage to agree that my right to return it is extended until it's been assessed? Otherwise, I'm not sure I want to take the chance as plenty of other ones available with same trim and similar mileage etc.

Would welcome any thoughts!

Does it come with any 'approved' breakdown cover...I guess its from a main dealer. If so you could call them and let them deal and recover it or at least have a look underneath and take it from there...

If you can return under the 14 day DSR I would do that.

Otherwise, rabbit holes beckon

It's the 1.2 petrol engine

Have had another play around this evening and the rattling noise is much worse if the AC is turned off. Starting the engine up sometimes the rattling is fairly quiet, turn the AC off and the rattling is then very loud. Bizarrely even putting the AC back on then the rattling persists.

If you are happy on the aux belt side then just get it booked in with the dealer and let them look, if there is any oil light that flashes or comes on longer than it should then don’t drive it and get it recovered in

Basically that engine is crap and is not designed with longevity in mind.

I had a 308 GT line and fortunately got rid of it while it was still running. I'm not sure if you your issue is related but the owners groups and forums are littered with owners suffering from the effects of a disintegrating cambelt as it runs in oil. The issue was supposed to affect cars up until 2017 and a recall was issued but it's still happening to a lesser degree.

I kept in touch with someone on the Facebook owners group. She had her belt done a couple of years ago paid for by Peugeot. Now she has a problem with high oil consumption. The likely cause is failing oil control rings which will probably mean a replacement engine at 84k miles.

So I still can't get a Peugeot garage to look at it for 10 days (by which time my 14 days to return has gone) but a local garage did have a v quick look for me this morning. Not a proper look as they're booked up for two weeks as well.

They don't think it sounds like a safety critical issue (as far as they can tell!) but obviously agree that something's not right.

All the brake calipers are heavily rusted as well it turns out. Does that move the needle does anyone else think to just return it, or is that normal for a car 19 months old?

Return it before the 14 days has expired and find something closer to home if you can.

Otherwise you may end up in all kinds of hassle with warranty etc..

I don't think your right to return should be conditional.

I think it's simply the case that if you decide for whatever reason you want to return an item under the distance selling act then there's no argument.

HOWEVER... has it been confirmed this applies to second hand cars? It may only apply to brand new items.

The dealer would fight it tooth and nail if you tried to return it but assuming the distance selling act is applicable that would be my first choice were I in your boots.

having said all of the above... if turning the AC on and off makes a difference then this could be just the AC clutch. A relatively minor problem, easy to diagnose and shouldn't be too expensive to resolve. I thought initially that you were talking about the engine itself rattling... which is a different kettle of fish.

My friend works at Citroen and said the same thing about that oiled cambelt . If the wrong grade of oil is used or not changed frequently enough it causes premature wear.
