Eco car

I need a little help from you legends. I do 1000miles per week as a project manager. Eco cars aren't my thing but recently like many people I've been thinking on how I can save some £££. So I am looking for something that can sit on the motorway comfortably and return decent mpg say 45-50mpg+. What can you guys come up with? I'm open to either ice diesel or petrol, I also like left field stuff. The twist is £1500 budget.

I currently run a transit custom crew van which is now £120 a tank filling up twice a week.

at that budget it's more what's available in your local region - buy more on condition that being focused on any make/model

Any 5 door rep car within a 10/20 miles radius (Mondeo/Vectra/Insignia's/Avensis etc) preferably petrol, can eeek out 45/50mpg if it's just sat on the motorway day in day out, also with unleaded cheaper at the moment, less to go wrong "potentially" than diesel, so less down time in the garage or off the road.

At £1500 budget, any unreliability issues will scupper the plan.

the simple answer is keep what you have, get it remapped if you haven't already done so.

You'll get better economy & because it's the devil you know you're less likely to suffer borkage.

Spend a bit more of your project manager salary and get one of these. 1000 miles a week in something worth £1500 is asking for trouble.

That is an outrageously low budget for something you'd look to put 50,000 miles a year on. Double it or triple it and then you'll be able to get something reasonable.

If you really can't then get a Civic or Jazz petrol and don't go over 70mph.

For 50k miles a year environment and comfort is more important than raw mpg. You will be spending nearly 70 days a year sitting in it! S class or equivalent is the only real option. Unfortunately your budget is way to low given current car prices.

50k/year mileage is going to want more than a £1500 budget, it's unreasonable to expect reliability, good MPG and any modicum of comfort for that budget, unfortunately. Do you not have a car allowance or company car option as a PM? It seems part and parcel of the majority of high UK travel PM roles that seem to fill my job searches when looking for SaaS roles.

I appreciate that personal finances may be the reason for the low budget, rather than the salary itself, but the long term view is that reliability and MPG will soon save you more money at 50k/yr than spending less upfront and having to comrpromise on both.
