Hello all

back has recently got alot worse and going to start looking at something comfortable rather than a nice coupe which turns my back into a quaver

looking for

- as comfortable as possible is bullet point 1
- 3.0 plus (ideally loud and remap possible)
- estate or SUV (probably )
- budget 20k or so? can stretch for the right car.

current ideas

audi s6 maybe s5?
BMW 535d
some sort of sq5 / x5

Fast Volvo of some sort is worth thinking about.

That said, with back problems sometimes having good suspension and soft seats isn't helpful enough. I've found seating position and overall driving position more influential, and in some cars the seating position and support has meant firm suspension hasn't had any impact on back comfort. The problem is it's a very unique and personal thing, for example one car I fitted into perfectly and had absolute comfort covering many miles was an R56 Mini! Equally, I've had two BMW 5-Series (F10 and G30) and had real struggles finding the right seating position.

Whatever you choose, try to get higher profile tyres. Unfortunately, that tends to be the lesser equipped/base models. Higher spec versions tend to have bigger wheels and lower profile tyres.

Or buy the performance car of choice and a set of second hand higher profile wheels. I spent £500 on a set of 19” wheels for my Macan PP and it transformed ride quality (compared to 21” wheels I bought the car with).
Just make sure you’ll have enough clearance for brake calipers.

About a year ago I bought a 1992 7-series. While it's not what you're looking for, it is so comfortable it's like driving a four-poster bed. No fancy air suspension, but it has one ace up its sleeves - 15" wheels! So for me, the trick is to buy something without low profile tyres for the ultimate comfort. A Range Rover perhaps?

I really think seats are more important than suspension when it comes to overall comfort. A car with firm suspension, but very supportive seats I’d wager is more comfy where it matters than something with squishy suspension and a driver’s seat that doesn’t suit your body.

Both of my cars have lumbar support and inflatable side bolsters (even though they’re 13 and 16 years old) and that makes all the difference to me in terms of comfort. I have no back issues, but am very picky when it comes to seats…

I didn’t find my old A6 on air suspension, the smallest possible alloys (17-inch in this case) and lumbar support that comfy as the seat was too wide and flat for me. My current Passat R36 is no softer in suspension terms, but the seats are so much more supportive and you can tailor them precisely to your body. Makes such a difference.

May not be the type of thing you were thinking of, but I would recommend the R36 with your brief. I imagine someone has tweaked the exhaust on mine and it makes an amazing sound from front and rear, has a 3.6-litre engine, is an estate and cost less than half your budget…

I’d personally stay clear of SUVs, as many are firmer than expected to stop them from rolling around, which limits their comfort levels and overall usefulness as on-road or off-road cars.

i think id rather go under 10k. older Q7? loads around 6-10k

or go up to maybe 30k and go a bit further.

I had an S6 few years back. Also suffered with back issues. The seats themselves were very comfortable and had more adjustment settings than basic cars. But they are very low, I had sciatica bad and it was hard to get into. A more upright car like the SQ5 would be better in that instance.

Most comfortable seat I've had in a car is a Honda CRV, but obvs that does nothing for the speed or excitement side of things.
