I should know this but can't work it out.

I've got my own car that I am registered keeper of, and will get another one tomorrow that will be for my missus.

I gather I need to be first named driver on insurance? I don't want to bend rules as I've made a claim so premium is slightly higher on me being named driver on policy.

Depends on which Insurance co and their own protocols but usually with 2 cars they will ask who is main driver and then with a couple just add the respective partner as the named additional driver ?
I guess if a multi car policy then probably even less hassle / cost involved for you given the loss.

Insurers are usually less bothered about spouses in terms of registered keeper than they are sons / daughters.

Just need to declare who will be the main driver of the vehicle and the insurance will then be primarily in their name with the other as a named driver

If you already have a claim on your policy then it may be better for you to NOT go on your spouse's policy but to drive their car on Third Party Only cover from your policy. (Assuming that the car is low value, that you have third party only cover etc etc etc).

I'm in a very similar situation and it was cheaper for us to do this when my wife bought a car. To my surprise then putting me on her policy would bump it up by a couple of hundred pounds a year. Driving it on my own policy was the obvious solution.

I was in a position a few years ago where due to trade in values I traded my main car in to buy my wife a new one and I drove her old Focus for around 6 months also registered to her so both our cars were in her name but I insured her old Focus on my policy as main driver, I declared my wife was registered keeper and a named driver on my policy and they were fine about it as we are married and living together, part of the policy application showed she owned another car as her main driver and no issues.

Be careful, DOC doesn’t usually cover cars within the same household

Due to reasons, with strong irony considering how we make living, we've ended up insuring each other's cars - Mrs T's MINI is on the policy in my name and the Civic is registered in my name but insured by her.

Both registered keepers declared correctly and hasn't had an effect on pricing as far as I can tell.

Thanks, and good spot. I cleared it with my broker so it's OK, but thanks for the warning.

If husband and wife are a similar age, most insurers don't care which of you insurers it or which of you is the main driver.

It's quite confusing, lots of options.

I have phoned my insurer as I forgot about multicar discounts etc, after speaking they said I could still be registered keeper and owner and have the missus do her own policy with me as a named driver.

If she was named driver on my multicar policy she'd start losing NCD and wouldn't have any NCD if she has the inevitable.

It got rather confusing on the phone put it that way.
