Looking foreconomical commuter. Help me keep my Mazda 3 MPS.

Hello,

Recently got a new job and I'm doing 54mi a day commuting. 6 days on, 3 days off and will be for the forseeable future. I am currently £300 a month on fuel in my Mazda 3 MPS and need something that will be cheap to run but has cruise and an ability to not have to drop a gear to get up relatively large hills. I drive a bypass everyday and cruise at 65mph but barely get 34mpg.

This car would also be used for taking my mtb away on day trips but the odd school run of 2mi here and there too.

Potentially looking at a petrol as the price of diesel is ridiculous and I cant see it coming down anytime soon.

What can be recommended as I want to keep my MPS if I can.

You probably won't find much petrol engined and with a bit of grunt to do any better than what you currently have.

To be honest I can't imagine there is a petrol car that will allow you to deal with hills and get better economy, although there are plenty that will do one or the other!

The later VW 1.4 tsi engine in 150hp guise is fairly nippy but also frugal. On a good run you can easily see 50mpg. Obviously available in lots of cars but the SEAT Leon is a good fit for it and better value than equivalent VW or Audi. As said above, a budget would be handy.
