Petrol engine with diesel torque curve?

I am looking for superlatives here - petrol engined cars that have diesel like torque curves - i.e. most of the torque is delivered below say 3000 revs. Any ideas?

Surely most turbocharged petrol engines, the bigger the better?

For example F90 M5 has peak torque at 1,800 rpm, and lots of turbo petrols have peak torque band 2,000 - (say) 4,500 / 4,800 revs.

Even my little 1.5 86 BHP diesel Renault Megane produces 200 Nm (147.51 lb.-ft) @ 1900 Rpm.

Interesting enough, this is the exact same amount of Torque a Clio 172 produces but at 5400RPM.

I think I have just worked out why I hate naturally aspirated petrol engines. As others have said, the only way you will get that sort of torque with a petrol is if it is turbocharged.

Would a big naturally aspirated V8 produce similar figures to a diesel?

it might produce similar torque levels, (ie a lot) but it wont have the same torque curve. a big n/a v8 will likely have a very flat torque curve all the way to the redline pretty much.

a petrol engine with a curve like a diesel might be a very small, highly turbocharged engine. like a ford ecoboost 1.0. absolutely nothing until the turbo kicks in, then all the torque, then almost certainly drops back off again if you take it over 4000rpm.

I've found that old n/a pusrod v6 and v8's have a very similar power delivery to a modern(ish) turbo diesel as in they have loads of low down torque but are out of puff by about 5k rpm.

Are you looking for appealing petrol engines with a broad spread or torque or simply those that tail off early, so they’re the most diesel-like? Loads of turbocharged petrols produce max torque early, but they generally hold onto it until higher revs than most diesels can rev to. The E90 BMW 335i comes to mind. Think max torque starts at 1,300rpm.

As for non-turbocharged petrols, the Passat R36 produces maximum torque from 2,400rpm to 5,300rpm, which I think is pretty impressive, considering max power comes in at 6,600rpm…

My C350e petrol plug in hybrid has a combined 600nm of torque between 1,200 and 4,000 rpm. Certainly feels similar pulling power like a strong diesel.

Similar to my PHEV Audi A3 e-tron, 244 lbft from 0 rpm, max. torque of 258 lb ft at 1500 - 3500 rpm.

My old F56 Cooper S(B48 2.0 turbo petrol 4 cyl) was quite diesel like in its delivery. Torque came in really low at 1200rpm so it felt torquey low to mid range, however it had nothing above 5500rpm(redline 6500rpm) though.

My wife's Mercedes B200 (2017 1.6 turbo) drives like a diesel, good low down torque and all done by 3,500 to 4,000 rpm.

Superlatives = the form of an adjective or adverb that expresses that the thing or person being described has more of the particular quality than anything or anyone else of the same type:

Of course, for me its the worst characteristic of a diesel engine that all the torque is low down and done by 5000rpm which is just when I want an engine to be coming to life so I might totally have the wrong end of the stick

Another for b207/2.0l turbo Saab - slug of torque between 1,500 and 3,500rpm then fairly linear.

The issue you have and that diesel driving mates commented is that the rev range is just plain larger with a petrol. We were getting up onto a 60mph limit dual carriageway and it’s very easy to go from rolling in 2nd to 60 with the rev range. Impossible with a diesel.
