I've just paid the deposit for a Ford Ka which will be used to teach my daughter to drive in. She turns 17 in a few weeks.

The plan is the car will always be mine (I'm not gifting either of my children a car), but they will ultimately become the main drivers of it.

I'm struggling to see how best to approach the insurance. My three key requirements are:
1. I will be the only driver of it for the next 4 weeks. I collect it tomorrow so as a minimum will need insurance for one day, but running the car myself for a couple of weeks would be beneficial to uncover any issues.
2. My daughter will then be learning with a provisional licence for probably 3-6 months. I don't know if this is important who the main driver is. A typical day might be me driving it to college to collect her, and she'll be driving back.
3. After passing, she will then be the main driver.

Short-term cover seems prohibitively expensive.

My current thoughts are to take out a policy in my name tomorrow, and then add her as a named driver next month.
When she passes, cancel my policy and start again in her name. I expect the savings from a specialist young-driver policy will dwarf any cancellation charge.

Just put her on as a named driver from the start.

Or, as I did, insured the car in my son's name as the main driver (on a provisional licence) with my wife and I as drivers. It was by far the cheapest option fir us.

I think you are over thinking it.

Online forms for all insurance companies I've tried won't allow a date-of-birth later than 23-May-2005 (which makes them 17 today)

I've phoned Direct Line and the advisor said the same. They cannot add a named driver under 17.

It's cheaper to insure them as the main driver on a Provisional licence with you as a named driver. They also start building up for NCB immediately.
Just be aware the price will go up a fair bit when they pass their test as they'll be driving unaccompanied.
(My sons went up £400)

I think I would take out in your name now as sole driver then once you want her on the policy change it to her name as the main driver ( irrespective of passed test or not ) then add you and your wife as named drivers as both cheaper and avoids any suggestion of fronting.
You might need to do this in person calling as opposed to online for the reasons you give.

Or wait until she is 17 to buy the policy and start off with it in her name as above.

I always found Admiral cheapest for my children with no need for black box policy etc and their online admin system pretty good.

Just insured my sons first car, him as owner of the car, him as policy holder, me as a named driver.

£234

It said if he passes within 40 days the policy will have to be cancelled, and a new one taken out.

I guess if over 40 days they'll give an option to keep with an extra premium?

I've just noticed that. Me as main driver and her as provisional named driver it is £330. If she's the main driver and I'm a named driver it's £230

So I think my plan is to take out a policy myself tomorrow. Run it for 13 days and cancel within the 14 day cooling off period. Pay for the pro-rata cover and a small admin fee.
Then new policy in her name on her birthday.
