What would you do?

The time has come to sell my BMW Z3 M Roaster to free up some cash. Mechanically the car is great but the car needs a respray and new roof.

Values seem all over the place and I’m not sure. It is a ‘98 S50 version with 78,000 on the clock (so not a high miler at all).

The quandary I have is; do I do this work and then sell it, or sell it in the current condition?

What do you think?!

If you have made you're mind up to sell. Sell now summer almost here.
One job could lead to an other with a respray.
It will look more genuine in original condition & easier if price according.

I probably wouldn't respray it before sale. Leaving it as is, the new owner has a few choices - ignore the paint issues, wrap it, cheap respray, high quality respray, colour change. Also they get to see it as-is before buying.

Put it another way, I doubt the max value you could attain post-respray would be above the cost selling as-is plus the cost of a decent respray.


With the hood, if it's "can't leave it out in the rain" bad maybe worth replacing, if it's just a bit tatty then probably not.

Thanks for the replies. This was my feeling too that I wouldn’t get the value of the respray back. I will get it serviced and MOT’d though.

The roof is water tight and have the hardtop too.

I’d try as is, no point in spending thousands on it you won’t get back, someone will jump on it if the rest is ok as it’s quite rare.

Just MOT it. Don’t bother with the respray or roof.

I wouldn't buy it if it's just been freshly painted. I'm too suspicious and would think your trying to hide something. Sell it as it is.

Thanks all. The consensus is not to respray. This saves time and money too. Better pull my finger out and get it in the classifieds!
