X4 40e advice

Hi all
My mother is hell bent on getting an X5 due to rose tinted view of her e53 many years ago.
Currently has an rx450h I firmly suggested she buy 4 yrs back, which predictably has been utterly reliable. But she finds the car boring and vanilla (visually).

She only does 3-4k mileage abyr
Most her daily trips are under 10 miles.
So instead of the usual diesel affair, the phev springs to mind.

I've gotten stark contrasting reviews from my car buddies.
Some say it'd be perfect, others say this era of BMW the cost savings for phev will be undone by the Bork factor, just get her a petrol version. The back up option I'm trying to convince her of is 2018/2019 X3.

But she continually shows me ads to X5s.... So we know where her heart it.

Her budget is circa 30k. Lower the better ofcourse, upto 100k mileage

Ownership reviews of the X5 40e are thin on the ground. Anyone have any tangible experience/advice

I would suggest it would only do 10-15 miles to a charge being an early PHEV but that sounds like it shouldn't be an issue for your Mum. For 95% of people however a diesel would be better overall in terms of running costs which may make it difficult to sell on in the future.

The battery might have a longer warranty than the engine so its worth investigating as its 10 years or 100k on a lot of cars (I believe...)

According to BMW's website, all of their PHEVs have a 6 year/60k miles warranty on the hybrid battery. It's not clear if the extended BMW warranty bought from BMW would give any cover on the hybrid system after this period.

I know on my Merc PHEV, the MB warranty covers the hybrid system even though the car's 6 year battery warranty has expired.

Regarding the "bork" factor, quite a few of these cars on Autotrader with 100k+ miles, including one at 132k miles. I feel that there are lots of "scary anecdotes" regarding hybrid system reliability that are based upon isolated experiences (and fear of the unknown) rather than based upon actual data in terms of what proportion of hybrids actually go wrong during the first 100k miles.

I've only driven the X5 diesels but had plenty of experience running 2-4 year old 530e and 330e with the similar drive train.

You should be fine upto 6-7 year old beyond that have had no experience.

The X5 isn't my cup of tea but its a decent car so it should be safe buy. But remember its a 2.3 ton 4x4 with massive tyres to it will go through consumables like a fat lad through cake

If that's what she wants then let her get one, they're decent & the drivetrain doesn't have any inherent issues.
