Newbie here so not sure if I'm posting this in the right place...

I have a Mk1 Z4 2.5 automatic which has been a great drive for a lot of years. I fancy something similar, but newer and shinier without breaking the bank. Has to be an automatic as well.

At the momement I'm thinking:
  • 2016ish Audi TT Roadster Mk3 @ ~£20k
  • vs
  • 2012ish Merc SLK Mk3 @ ~£12k
I don't really want to go much over £20k which is why the newest Z4 is (sadly) not an option. Not really keen on the tin top Z4.

I've read the reviews and I'm definitely leaning towards the TT if I can get my hands on one. From what I've read the SLK (or the newer SLC) don't drive as well as the TT. I don't really want to go for a newer SLC as I don't fancy paying the same price as the TT for it when I can get an older SLK for less. But I'm in Northern Ireland and it looks nigh on impossible to get a TT roadster auto for sale here from what I can see, so may have to buy from the mainland or see if someone here can source one from the mainland.

Curious to get thoughts from here? What would you recommend?

Or are there other options I haven't thought of? (even potentially keep the Z4 smile )

When you say you aren't keen on the tin-top Z4 do you mean the E86 Coupe?

The E89 Z4 has a metal folding roof, but then so does the SLK so I assume you don't mean that when you say "tin top".

In which case I would have thought an E89 35is or 35i with the DCT gearbox might be an option.

I'd guess it's the previous Z4 with the folding metal roof that OP doesn't want?

Auto does limit choices and also hints at wanting more of a cruiser than the sharpest driving tool. In which case I'd probably go for the SLK. Not sure if they're available or in budget but there was an SLK amg55 v8 which has monster power if you like!

Another possibility if you want newish and hassle free could be an mx5 RF. They come with auto and 20k might get you the latest 184bhp version.

If you do end up looking at an SLK of that era, look out for ones with plastic roof panels (should have been changed to glass, even if not 'see through' due to leaks). Also avoid 'Fire Opal' red (non metallic) as it tends to microblister and needs respraying under warranty.

...Guess what colour and type of roof my wife's 2011 SLK has? rolleyes

Have you looked at a 370Z? They're what you describe & under budget:

Your budget would land you a very nice SLK55:

Sorry, busy few days so didn't get a chance to get back to this. Thanks for the replies.

Mr Tidy / ChrisH72,
It's more the Z4 tin top I'm not keen on as opposed to tin tops in general, tho I have heard tin tops can be more prone to mechanical issues than soft tops?

If I get an SLK/SLC or TT then it's the latest model (well sort of for the SLK), the Z4 tin top is not the latest model anymore. Probably should have mentioned that.

ZX10R NIN,
The latest model requirement (and the running costs) would also rule out the SLK55 posted above, tho it looks like an absolute beast! smile

The 370Z is a good shout! I actually looked at a 350Z before I bought the Z4 and decided against because it was incredibly thirsty and the road tax was insane. I think the 370Z is similar - so I will give it consideration but would probably lean towards the SLK or TT still.

OldSkoolRS,
Thanks for the heads up on opal red, and the plastic roof, good to know!

Anyone know how the TT and the SLK drive compared to the Z4? Also about reliability?

Thanks again!

(EDIT: looks like the forum is doing weird stuff with my name but I am the OP!) biglaugh
