Should I buy a 420d with 80000 miles?

Looking at buying a 420d from garage with 80000 miles has 1 owner and good service history but should I be worried about the mileage?

If it's over 3 years old it's worth doing a quick check using the registration number here: https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-history
It helps confirm the mileage (although not guaranteed) and if it's been looked after in the past.

I’m new to buying a BMW, I hear good and bad but always wanted one,
It’s supposedly though that “80000” is classed as high mileage but I would sooner go with how the well the car has been taken care of before judging the mileage!

Cars are well designed and engineered.


Buy on everything EXCEPT mileage is my recommendation.

OP what does 'good' service history mean?

My view is that while these diesels are designed to do high mileages, correct maintenance is essential. The service history should be perfect

There is something about that but I wouldn’t class 80000 miles as very high mileage. If mostly motorway then wear would be minimal. I had a e46 320d and it was a different engine but the service intervals were (I think) oil changes every 7500 miles. I certainly did more frequent oil changes from 150k miles onwards as a precaution. Sold it with 187k miles on original turbo and clutch. Followed it up on mot and it went to 207k miles but with no maintenance from buyer.

320s ES, very basic but easily the best car I had. Bought it with 57k miles cost me just over £5000.

They seem to be it' doesn't seem to be an issue like it was on earlier cars.

I would imagine 80k miles on an 8 year old 420d is average, or even slightly below average, miles.

Think that's the last model year that still has the N47 engine. Be sure to read up on the timing chain issues and allocate the funding for if it ever needs changing. It's almost like a service item, certainly on the 4-pots!

It's also a good mileage for the first gearbox oil change if it has the (ZF8) automatic...

BMW/Audi class the 4GC/5 door A5 as saloons (they're clearly hatchbacks) & in the same tone a coupe for me will always have two doors.
