With an upcoming house move my commute is tripling to 90 miles, consisting of pretty much A roads, and motorways. With this in mind, my current i30N may be relegated to weekend work, or sold all together for a better toy.

The criteria is:
  • Not a 4 Cyl
  • 45mpg+
  • Comfy
  • Good sound system
  • Cruise control
  • Automatic (preferably the ZF8)
  • Space for a dog, or 2
I can't really think much past a F31 (2012 on) 330d Touring, or maybe a 530d, or maybe an Audi A4 3.0TDi. Or, a VW Touareg, but I'm not entirely sure whether they'd do 45+ on a run.

Any got any other ideas?

I’d go 530d. I run a F30 330d for 2.5 years and it was a good car but I think the 5 is a step up.

Sounds like a 3-cyl diesel Range Rover is what you're after

I doubt a touareg would do 45 on a run, or anywhere near it.

Another vote for 530d, with HK and wide-screen nav.

An early v90 might just squeeze into budget?

I'd be looking at a Mercedes E350cdi with the 9G box:

45Mpg average in a 30d is going to be difficult to achieve unless literally 99% of your driving is motorway.

We have a 430D and I get 38mpg with 80% motorway.
